In a nutshell
The IB Extended Essay is a journey that every Diploma candidate is required to undertake. Accompanied by a qualified supervisor, the students select a topic related to one of the IB subjects and conduct research to propose a new piece of knowledge. The result is a 4000 word essay: it is a first encounter with academic research.
This page takes you to the Extended Essay Timeline at a glance so you can see the different steps you will going through during your journey with the Extended Essay. It contains important information but you should keep in mind that this is the approach that St.Mary's has adopted: each school determines the timeline for the Extended Essay as they see fit so do not be surprised if you see differences with other IB schools online.
Before writing or researching anything, you will be asked to select two subjects from the list of available subjects offered for evaluation in the IB Extended Essay program. If you are not sure, refer to the IB Extended Essay Guide as it contains the entire (and long) list of subjects.
After the EE has been introduced to you by the EE Coordinator, you will be prompted to fill in a form titles "Extended Essay - proposal" and select:
Two subjects that you are equally eager to research. Remember that there should be no ranking in your head for one over the other: you must be ready to engage in research whatever the outcome of the pairing process is.
Two topics: one for each subject. These topics will be refined with your supervisor once the results of the pairing process have been released.
Two tentative research questions: one for each topic. Again, the research question can be modified with the help of the supervisor later on.
In order to provide you with the most accurate information, here is what the Google reads for students:
This forms collects information that will be used to pair you with an Extended Essay supervisor.
You must choose TWO subjects that you consider viable options for research. Be careful! There must not be any ranking between the two subjects: you should be equally interested in both of them so that you will be satisfied with any outcome in regards to the matching process.
Please keep in mind that the subject list contains some subjects that you will not be able to research as there may not be a qualified supervisor in school for that subject (for example, this is the case for dance, theatre, film, anthropology, and others).
Submitting this form implies that you recognize having read the subject specific guides (in the IB Extended Essay Guide) and that you understand the requirements for each selected subjects as far as the Extended Essay is concerned.
Until the due date and time (cf. Google Classroom), you are allowed to modify your answers to this form. On the due date and time, the form will be closed and no change in subjects will be allowed!
Alongside your Extended Essay, you must also complete the EE Planning and Progress Form (EERPPF). This is done on Managebac in the "Planning & Progress" section. You will have to complete three reflections at three key moments. The presentation on the left is here to help you write good reflections.
Remember that your reflections count in the grading of your Extended Essay (criterion E "Engagement")
Attention!!
Please keep in mind the following about the EE reflections:
All three reflections together must not exceed a total of 500 words (1000 characters in Japanese);
Each reflection must be completed on Managebac;
Once completed, the reflections are locked and cannot be edited: it is your responsibility to draft your reflections first and post them by the set deadline;
Sending an incomplete EE-RPPF to the IB for evaluation may result in the loss of several points or all of them for criterion E (worth a total of 6 points).
This presentation explains how the grade you will receive in TOK and the grade you will receive in the EE combine for grant you 3, 2, 1 or no additional points to the maximum 42 you can score with the IB subjects.
This is an important note on academic honesty with regards to the Extended Essay.
Plagiarism as well as data fabrication or any kind of academic dishonesty will be taken very seriously. If there is evidence of such breech at any point in the Extended Essay process, a report will be sent to the High School Administration who will determine what measures must ensue.
Please keep in mind that any Extended Essay for which there is even a single doubt with regards to honesty must not be sent for assessment to the IB. If you were to be in this situation, it means that you would jeopardize your chances to obtain the Diploma.
