Fourth Grade ELA Expectations
At the end of Fourth Grade students should be able to:
-Identify the theme or main idea of a story, play, or poem.
-Compare stories from different cultures.
- Explain how an author uses facts, details, and evidence to support their points.
-Read and understand information presented in charts, graphs, timelines, and other illustrations.
-Learn the rules of spoken and written English.
-Learn and using new words, including words related to specific subjects (such as science words).
-Participate in class discussions by listening, asking questions, sharing ideas, and building on the ideas of others.
-Give a class presentation on a topic or telling a story using relevant, organized facts and details and speaking clearly.
-Write stories with dialogue and descriptions of character’s actions, thoughts, and feelings .
-Take notes and organizing information from books, articles, and online sources to learn more about a topic.
-Write research or opinion papers over extended periods of time.
MATH EXPECTATIONS FOR INCOMING FOURTH GRADERS:
-Have mastered multiplication facts through 12 x 12 with quick recall
BE READY TO:
-Have an understanding of place value with whole numbers through the millions place
-Apply problem-solving strategies to solve word problems and locate context clues
-Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers correctly
-Understand and use symbols (+, -, x, ÷, <, >, =) correctly
-Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number and multiply two two-digit numbers
-Find whole number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors
-Have a basic understanding of fractions and decimals
-Demonstrate a grasp of geometric concepts of line, two-or-three dimensional shapes and the mathematical procedures that accompany them such as perimeter and area as well as use of a protractor
