January-March News

Hello from the Music Room!!

Now that we're back in school after a cold and snowy Christmas Break, we start one of my (And many of the students') favorite units of the year.  At this time of the year, we learn about all of the musical instruments. Each week I bring in and play instruments from the different instrument families and the students see them, hear them, and learn about them; How they work, where they come from, etc. They will learn abiut the violin, cello, guitars, ukuleles, mandolin, banjo, flutes and whistles, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, trombone, baritone, French Horn, Tuba, and all manner of drums!! This series of lessons will bring us into early March in the Music Room.

Be sure to ask your students which instruments they saw in music class this week.

During Catholic Schools Week, we're never sure what classes will have Music Class.  For the classes that do, I save the "Double Reed" instruments.  Part of explaining how the Double Reed instruments (Shawm, Bombard, Oboe, Bassoon, Bagpipes) work involves having the students create their own double reeds from straws. I think I can safely say that they love it!

Also, on February 8th, the Diocese of Buffalo hosted "Catholic Schools Day at the BPO" at Kleinhans Music Hall.  SME's 1st - 4th Graders attended the concert and had a great time!!
