Middle School ELA

Welcome to middle school ELA at SME! Taking a modern approach to learning traditional English skills all aligned with NYS ELA Next Generation Learning standards, at SME our students get experience with a wide breadth of materials and topics. Students are challenged to read a variety of different literature genres in order to study both the work itself as well as the craft of the author. Students are encouraged to go beyond reading the literature and to truly study it. Middle school ELA works to get students to be true thinkers - individuals who not just read and write but think about what they read and write in order to arrive at and present conclusions. Students work to enhance their writing with various writing projects (creative & academic) as well as targeted instruction in English usage and grammar. Keeping in line with Catholic identity, students are taught to look at content through the Catholic lens. We look to increase our knowledge of the faith and its teachings as we explore the beautiful worlds of reading and writing!

About the Teacher

Miss Sullivan is entering her third year teaching at SME and fourth year of teaching overall. She has experience teaching middle school ELA, reading AIS, as well as physical education. Miss Sullivan also as serves as SME's Campus Minister and 8th Gr. Homeroom teacher. In her free time Miss Sullivan is very active. A 'gym rat' at heart, she enjoys coaching basketball and track as well as training for running races and weight lifting. She also is very devout in her faith, making sure to take time each day to cultivate her relationship with God through prayer, especially attending Mass as often as possible. Miss Sullivan encourages her students to be the unique person God made them to be and to choose excellence in all they do by working-hard, keeping a sense of humor, never being afraid to try a challenge, staying rooted in prayer, and bringing her chocolate whenever they can remember.
