**Courses will be visible in Edmentum starting January 3rd for second semester**

Student Responsibilities

During Virtual Learning, students are expected to

  • Log in and participate daily

  • Plan on approximately 5-6 hours work per day

  • Communicate with their assigned teacher as necessary

Students and families are encouraged to set a routine or schedule during Virtual Learning to help ensure successful completion of the course.

During Virtual Learning, students are still considered part of PHMS and PHHS. As such, the policies and information the PHMS Student Handbook and PHHS Student Handbook apply

Parent Responsibilities

Parents have a direct impact on the education their child receives, both in online learning or in a traditional setting. Parents serve as a coach and encourager for their students at any age and can support them through the learning process.

Parents and families are not meant to serve as the “homeschooler” during Virtual Learning. Instead, parents can offer support and positive encouragement to the learning and reinforce good habits for a successful virtual learning experience.

Parents are responsible for ensuring their student has access to Edmentum Courseware and are logging in and participating daily, just as parents are responsible for getting their child to school each day during in-person learning.

Parents are encouraged to set a schedule or routine for their child during Virtual Learning and create a designated space in the home that is conducive to the child learning.

School/Teacher Responsibilities

Provide access to high-quality curriculum and instruction that enables participating children to meet Indiana Academic Standards for student achievement.

Provide parents and students reasonable access to staff (email, website, phone, PowerSchool Parent Portal)

Support students with academic help as they work through courses in Edmentum Courseware platform.

Attendance Policy

School attendance, whether online or in-person is critical to student success. Students in Virtual Learning are expected to login and make progress Monday - Friday (or everyday that school is in session according to the SMCSC calendar)

Secondary (7th - 12th) students should make progress through the modules and activities in their assigned courses in Edmentum everyday of the school week. On average, students should spend an 60 minutes per course per day (5-6 hours total) and are expected to be making adequate progress to stay on pace to finish the course by the end of the semester. Students have approximately 18 weeks to complete a course. Students should complete the requirements of each course, including the End of Semester Exam, by the end of the semester (December 17th, 2021 for the Fall Semester, May 25th for Spring Semester).

The nature of online learning does allow a student to work at their own pace and students may choose to login on non-school days. However, attendance for Virtual Learning students will be determined by a student’s login to Edmentum on the days that school is in session according to the South Madison calendar. This attendance will be updated in PowerSchool each week. Students and families will be notified regularly of their progress by their teachers. Consequences for excessive absences may include parent conference or referral to the School Resource Officer, Madison County Prosecutor or Department of Child Services.
