What's a "Digital Breakout?"

"Breakout Boxes" have been seen in classrooms for a while now. Looking to capitalize on the popularity of "Escape Rooms", the "Breakout Box" presents students with a series of clues, puzzles, and hints in an effort to correctly determine an answer which will allow them to "Break" each of the "Locks." These are highly engaging and students typically enjoy them. However, the prep for the activity can be a bit much, having to procure the box itself and all the locks, in addition to resetting the locks and clues after each period.

A "Digital Breakout" solves those issues. While the creation of a "Digital Breakout" can take some planning and time, that initial investment of work pays off when you can continually reuse the activity by simply providing a link to your students.

This session will be run as a "Digital Breakout," which in itself is a tool to be used in the classroom. Each "Lock" will introduce you to a different digital tool. You will be tasked with solving each of the "Locks" given. To solve each "Lock," you must navigate through all the links and resources provided on this site. Breaking each "Lock" requires an exact answer, which must follow all parameters given within the description of each "Lock."

Now that you have had a brief introduction to what a "Digital Breakout" might look like, it's time to get started on your own! Remember, this activity is a dual purpose exercise. You are working through a "Breakout" which is an idea unto itself, while at the same time, each of the "Locks" within the "Breakout" will introduce you to a digital tool which can also be utilized in your classroom. We will cover the digital tools individually once the "Breakout" is over!
