This year you will take part in Spring Ridge Middle School’s Science Symposium. This exciting event encourages students to think like young scientists. During the next few months, you will be designing a science project that uses the scientific method or the engineering process to solve a problem. The educational benefits of this academic exercise are numerous because students develop skills in writing, oral presentation, creative thinking, and problem-solving.
Every student enrolled in STEM 6 is required to complete a project for Symposium for their science teacher.
During science class, each student is given guidelines, instructions, and grading criteria for the various steps of his or her project. Please review the monthly calendar and note the due dates for each part of the project. Students are expected to meet these deadlines by completing the work at home or in class. The science experiment or engineering project must be completed at home because we do not have the space for all students to work at school.
NOTE: Students will construct their final display boards in class. Any boards assembled at home will not be graded.
I ask for parents to encourage and monitor student progress along the way. Your support is vital to a successful project. To assure equity and promote student learning, please do not allow your involvement to extend any further! Guide your child whenever and wherever you can, but let the final project reflect your child's individual effort and design.
I look forward to watching your child enjoy this unique opportunity for scientific discovery!
