MTSS is a data-driven decision making framework for establishing the social culture and behavioral supports needed for a school to be an effective learning environment for all students. These supports include clearly defined behavioral expectations, explicit instruction of expectations, acknowledgement of appropriate behavior and correction of inappropriate behavior.
The staff at Leonardtown Middle School recognizes that not all students come to school knowing and understanding the rules and expectations. Research indicates that explicitly teaching behavioral expectations, and acknowledging students for following them, is more effective than waiting for misbehavior and responding to it with punishment. We also strive to establish and maintain a culture and climate in which appropriate behavior is the norm.
P.A.W.S. serves as an umbrella for our basic school-wide rules and expectations: Positive and Polite, Accept responsibility, Work hard, and Safety first. These expectations are consistent in every setting in the school. If we expect to see a change in overall school climate, adults need to be a united front in order for MTSS to be as effective as possible. Every adult in the building should be working on the following each day:
Teach and reteach the expectations throughout the year
Acknowledge students who are meeting the expectations
Be present in the hallways, active supervision is important
Correct classroom managed behaviors and refer office managed behaviors
The MTSS team includes teachers, administrators, counselors, student support professionals, and students. The team meets regularly to analyze behavioral data to determine areas or behaviors that may require additional support. The team shares information with, and invites input from, staff, parents, and students. We welcome your questions, concerns, and ideas and want you to be a part of the team!
