Per Policy ICA, the school year calendar is approved by the Board of Education. St. Mary’s County Public Schools (SMCPS) seeks input through a calendar committee involving members of the education associations, teachers, support staff, principals, central office staff, students, and parents. This committee makes recommendations to the Superintendent, who reviews and submits to the Board of Education for approval.
Per the Governor’s Executive Order, the school year shall begin after Labor Day, and conclude by June 15.

SMCPS has built in 5 inclement weather days (3 at the end of the year, plus Presidents' Day and Easter Monday) to allow for school closings due to snow.
"SMCPS recognizes the significant workload of bargaining unit members and commits to working with the Calendar Committee to make some time available each month (when possible, similar to the 2009-2010 school system operational calendar) for the performance of professional responsibilities (without students) during the duty day." (EASMC Negotiated Agreement, Article IV)
