Unit and Project Introduction: In addition to defining the concept of transportation and providing an overview to the unit, students will participate in team formation activities that build the foundations for student teams to be successful in working together. Lesson Segments for Phase 1 Include:
Foundational Knowledge and Core Issue: Students will identify the modes of transportation and do a comparative analysis of the main modes of transportation used to travel to and from school. By the end of this phase, students will have identified the modes of transportation that are healthiest for people and the planet. Lesson Segments for Phase 2 Include:
Safe Routes in a Place-Based Context: Students will consider the question, “Is it safe to walk or roll to and from school?” The process for identifying the answer to this question will be the same for all communities; however, the answer will vary based on the local context. Becoming Solutionaries: Students will design and implement solutions to the problems they outlined in Phase Three. Students will also reflect on the impact of their solutions. Lesson Segments for Phase 4 Include:
