UNESCO Ocean Literacy Portal: Ocean literacy is an understanding of the ocean’s influence on you—and your influence on the ocean. There are seven Essential Principles of Ocean Literacy comprising 45 Fundamental Concepts. The Ocean Literacy Framework comprises the Ocean Literacy Guide, the Ocean Literacy Scope and Sequence for Grades K–12, and the Alignment of Ocean Literacy to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). This 3-part framework presents a vision of an ocean-literate society and outlines the knowledge required to be considered ocean literate. Several hundred leading scientists and educators contributed to the development of these consensus documents.
NASA: Climate Kids use information, videos, activities, and handouts to teach students about climate change. They also have materials about water, weather & climate, and atmosphere.
National Geographic: Sample activities, illustrations, games, and exploration guides for K-2, 3-5th grade bands that bring the ocean into the classroom.
Ocean Today: Videos and multimedia activites on oceans, wildlife, marine debris and science exploration.
California Coastal Commission: Curated and high quality resources on California's coastal environment.
Game of Floods (Marin County): This real-world scenario activity creates small groups in which participants are tasked with developing a vision for 'Marin Island 2050', a hypothetical landscape with conditions Marin County will be experiencing with sea level rise. San Mateo County educators can contact the Office of Sustainability for facilitation of this high quality simulation.
Lawrence Hall of Science: Ocean Science Curriculum sequences for 3-5th grade and 6-8th. The 6-8th grade sequence covers the Ocean-Athmosphere connection and climate change.
NOAA - Data in the Classroom: Interactive Online Guide for students to practice their skills in interpreting real world data. Students are guided through ArcGIS mapping activities with video instructions and live data sets:
California Coastal Commission: Curated and high quality resources on California's coastal environment. For Grades 6-12 they have environmental justice themed resources that relate to marine environments.
National Geographic: Sample activities, illustrations, games, and exploration guides for 6-8th and 9-12th grade bands that bring the ocean into the classroom. There is a project-based learning unit of study for 9-12th grade on marine ecology.
