Construction & Renovation: All school building construction and renovation in California is overseen at the state level by the Division of State Architects (DSA). DSA approves plans, issues permits, and provides guidance on how to comply building codes. With the adoption of CALGreen, the statewide initiative to use green building design principles, DSA has started providing technical assistance to schools on sustainability (Achieving Net Zero Energy).
Facilities Master Planning & Bonds: Before beginning major building projects school districts will make a Facilities Master Plan. Often school districts will also raise funds through a community bond measure. Utilize these resources to learn more about what the current status of facilities planning is in San Mateo County Schools:
The California Department of Pesticide Regulation (CDPR) oversees the implementation of the Healthy Schools Act. This includes integrated pest management (IPM) compliance. Schools are required to identify an IPM Coordinator, update a IPM plan regularly, and provide training to all school staff on IPM practices.
Green Business Network: The County of San Mateo Office of Sustainability offers assistance for programs in San Mateo County that want to participate in California's Green Business Network. County employees will assist schools in evaluating their operations and making measurable changes to decrease energy and water use.
