I am advocating the use of discrete particle models for studying the effect of microstructure and its evolution in the mechanical response of materials. We have developed a new approach which we call Constitutively informed Particle Dynamics (CPD) to study the response of materials with very general constitutive behaviour which were not hitherto accessible to discrete particle approaches.
