Epilepsy is one of the most dreadful brain disorder with an incidence rate of 70 million people worldwide. It causes neurological and behavioral alterations characterized by spontaneous seizures. About 30-40% of epilepsy cases are drug-resistant. Zebrafish, a suitable model organism to study epilepsy . These organism has a similar behavioral seizures pattern compared to human. Accumulation of misfolded proteins in the Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) results in ER stress. Uncontrolled ER stress is known to contribute to the development of various neurodegenerative diseases like epilepsy. PIGBOS1 is known to regulate ER stress and ER stress is associated with induction of epilepsy. Since our lab is working on cell signaling, calcium signaling, zebrafish disease model and patch clamp, hence the motivation is to find the underlying molecular mechanism, which can further add a compliment for therapeutic intervention for Epilepsy.
