The EE Department allows you to credit research projects carried out over a semester through structured EE490x courses.
The UGRC is available for registration as EE4901/EE4902/EE4903, a 9-credit course, and is typically intended for students in their 2nd year and above. Through this, students could get a flavour of research happening in the institute in the form of a semester-long research project. Read more about UGRC in this post by Prof. Uday Khankhoje.
The B. Tech Project (BTP), EE4900, is a 27-credit course, typically intended for students in their 8th semester. Having a high credit weightage, students are expected to devote a significant amount of time towards the project. According to the institute curriculum, a BTP is not mandatory for B.Tech requirements but is mandatory if opting for B.Tech (Honours).
The Dual Degree Project (DDP), a year-long project beginning the summer after the 8th semester, is a mandatory requirement towards the award of a Dual Degree. Most dual degree students typically have a course or two in their final semesters and are expected to make significant contributions towards the DDP.
The M.Tech Project (MTP), also a year-long project beginning the summer after the 2nd semester, is a mandatory requirement towards the award of a M.Tech Degree.
While some faculty list out openings in UGRC/BTP/DDPs on a common forum/ sheet, students are free to approach any faculty requesting the same. These projects can also be in collaboration with faculties from other institutes/ industries, provided there is a faculty from the institute who is a co-guide. Similarly, ongoing projects can also be continued towards these.
Jan. 2024: We have curated a list of available research opportunities within the department here! We do hope this helps you get started on your research journey!
Details on Summer Internship Programs relevant to students from the Department will be updated shortly. Until then, refer Insearch 8.0 for the list of internships and their deadlines for the previous cohort.
NB: As per the study regulations for B.Tech in Electrical Engineering, a summer industrial internship is a mandatory requirement. A research internship cannot be done in lieu of the same. Students interested in research opportunities tend to finish the mandatory industrial internship requirements in startups, in the summer after their 4th semester. This requirement has been waived off for the graduating batches of 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025.
Aug. 2023: We have conducted a fundae session for the same, please have a look here for the presentation.
Note: On further demand, we've linked another repository with an exhaustive list of research internships that UGs can possibly apply for: Research Internship Database. Hope you do check it out.
The IITM Young Research Fellow Program is open to students entering their 5th semester of B.Tech/ DD programs. A cohort of about 30-40 students is selected every year through a rigorous process comprising of proposal submission followed by interviews, and the selected students work on a year-long project with their guides. The fellows also get to attend research-readiness classes & CLIC coaching sessions, in addition to getting credits/ stipend.
Apart from applying to a project among the list of projects floated by faculty, students can also propose projects or convert existing projects under YRF after discussions with their (potential) guides. While the application process begins around August, it might be convenient if you could start reaching out to potential guides and contact the YRF Committee a bit early if you wish to propose a project.
For more details, visit https://yrf.iitm.ac.in , or contact Ms. Sumani at yrfadmin@smail.iitm.ac.in
Watch out for an email from Prof. S. Aniruddhan, yrf@smail.iitm.ac.in announcing the program. Resources on YRF applications would be updated closer to the application period!

IIT Madras and Purdue University have launched a Joint Dual Degree in the field of semiconductors. Selected students would spend their 5th year at the Purdue West Lafayette Campus, undertaking coursework and projects. The selection process starts sometime around the 6th semester.
For more details, contact Prof. Nitin Chandrachoodan, at nitin@ee.iitm.ac.in
Outside the realm of structured internships and research programs, students can also work with faculty from IIT Madras or other institutes by approaching them on an individual basis. These projects could be done remotely over the semester, or even in person during vacations. While some of these projects could be initiated through collaborations/ referrals through your current guides, most often these are through cold mailing. In such cases, it is important to send a carefully crafted email that has the best chance of acceptance. Read the blog post on "How to write a good email?"
