The Department of Biotechnology at IIT Madras and DST-FIST Advanced Bioimaging Facility in collaboration with the India Bioimaging Consortium is organizing a specialized hands-on-training workshop on advanced fluorescence microscopy techniques and image analysis designed for Ph.D. scholars, Post-Doctoral researchers from academic institutions and industry working in bioscience, bioengineering, biomedical and medical sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, and allied fields.
This workshop will offer a comprehensive blend of theoretical lectures and practical training in both fundamental and advanced microscopy techniques. It is designed for small, focused groups, and will involve active learning through expert lectures from internationally recognized faculty and technical scientists, guided experiments, and hands-on exposure to sophisticated microscopy systems on a variety of fluorescence-based techniques.
Training Curriculum:
Fundamentals of Light Microscopy and Immunofluorescence
Live Cell Imaging & Time-lapse Imaging
Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET)
Fluorescence Recovery After Photobleaching (FRAP)
Expansion Microscopy (ExM)
Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence (TIRF)
Quantitative Image Analysis and Interpretation
Salient Features:
Hands-on instructions on wide-field and confocal microscopy systems
Networking and mentoring opportunities with internationally recognized faculty and microscopy support specialists
Individual problem solving, discussion and trouble-shooting
Free access to training toolkit, reference guides, and image analysis software
Software demonstrations and data analysis sessions
Certificate of participation from IIT Madras

Conceptual understanding of basic principles of fluorescence, fluorophore properties, optical path of a fluorescence microscope, widefield vs. confocal vs. super-resolution microscopes
Practical microscope skills involving microscope set up and image acquisition from fixed and live samples, with optimized parameters to minimize photobleaching and phototoxicity
Sample preparation and labeling involving appropriate selection of fluorescent dyes/probes/proteins for specific biological questions, avoiding common artefacts and protocol adjustment
Image processing and analysis involving basic image processing tools (ImageJ/FIJI), deconvolution, quantitative analyses of colocalization, intensity across multiple dimensions (time, z, wavelength), and scientific presentation of images and graphs
Application and experimental design to choose the right microscopy platform/technique to answer biological questions of interest, including controls and replicates, and interpret fluorescence images to draw biological conclusions
