SLUSD Week of Professional Learning

August 7-10, 2023

Your Teaching, Learning, and Educational Equity team is hosting a week of professional learning workshops to kick off the 2023-2024 school year!  

Check out the offerings, and use the sign up link to register for your workshops by June 12th.  Unless otherwise noted, the session will be in person at one of our school sites.  Some workshops may have maximum enrollment sizes, and sessions may be rescheduled due to low enrollment, and all registrants will be notified.

The workshops we're hosting all focus on key topics that will help us cultivate hopeful, efficacious, and thriving learning communities! For our returning teachers, this is a chance to refresh and deepen your practice!  For new teachers, this is a chance to learn about core practices and curricula for teaching in SLUSD.

New Teacher Session: Key Practices for Starting the Year Strong (TK-5); 8:30 - 11:30am  Presenter: Sally Barry
A little prep before the first week of school can go a long way towards a smoother first year. Join us for a supportive session addressing some of the key practices for creating a warm and productive classroom environment.

Preparing your Counseling Enriched Classroom and Curriculum (Invitation Only); 8:30 - 11:30am  Presenter: Nansie Rogers
Counseling Enriched Instructors: Take some time before the beginning of the school year to learn about best practices supporting students with Emotional Disturbances, routines and strategies for setting up self- contained classes for diverse learners, and create community within the Counseling Enriched cohort and support providers!

This session is for new teachers to begin to learn the tools and platforms utilized in SLUSD.
Session highly recommended for first year teachers.

STAR Computer-Adaptive Test Training  (K-12); 2 - 3:30pm (virtual session) Presenter: Renaissance Learning
All K-12 students are required to take the STAR Computer Adaptive test in ELA and Math multiple times per year as our universal screener and to monitor progress. This virtual session will address 

Shifting from Chatting to Discourse: Scaffolding & Assessing Academic Conversations (6-12); 12:30 - 3:30pm Presenter: Samantha Johnson
Practice how to get your students more comfortable with academic discourse and then how to scaffold up to more advanced conversation strategies. We will attend to community building and then move to strategies for academic meaning-making and assessment of understanding. Regardless of how much your students currently talk, you will leave with new practical strategies to help your students level up!

It's all Connected: Science and Language Arts Integration (K-5); 8:30 - 11:30am  Presenter: Channon Jackson (ACOE)
We will dive into how integrating science with Language Arts helps children use and practice language and literacy as they engage in developing an understanding of a science phenomena. We will examine some key steps to a successfully integrated science lesson, explore how UDL aligns with the Next generation Science Standards, and collaborate as we create our own integrated lessons.

Building a Caring and Supportive Academic Community (6-12); 8:30 - 3:30pm (with a lunch break)  Presenter: Samantha Johnson
How do you set up your class culture for caring peer support, authentic academic discourse, and productive student collaboration?  Come learn key strategies from an experienced teacher making it happen every day at our neighboring Arroyo High School.  Note this is a full day session with a mid day lunch break.

Setting up Unique Learning Systems Curriculum (Mod/Severe SPED, TK-12); 8:30 - 3:30am (with a lunch break) Presenter: Unique Learning Systems
Learn about the Unique Learning System (ULS), the curriculum and platform designed specifically to support your moderate/ severe classrooms. Set up your classes for a successful first day!

Brilliance in Action: An Introduction to Antiracist Universal Design for Learning Strategies (PreK- 12); 12:30 - 3:30pm  Presenter: Andratesha Fritzgerald
Join Andratesha Fritzgerald, our amazing keynote speaker from the March 2023 PD Day, in a session designed to give you the opportunity to make personal connections to the idea of Universal Design for Learning as an equity building framework as well as learn practical strategies to get started implementing in your classroom right away!

Rubric & Standards Based Grading: Aeries and Syllabi Support (6-12); 9am-12pm   Presenters: Gaia Pine, Teresa Liao, Kathy Passmore & Sarah Kayler
This session is for teachers who previously completed the Grading for Equity course and just need some implementation support. We will look at various way to set up Aeries to meet your goals as well as provide support in how you explain your grading to students and families through your syllabus.

Benchmark Reading Assessment (K-5); 8:30 - 11:30am  Presenter: Mari Ullrich
This session will show you how to assess student reading using the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System. With this important information, you can make guided reading groups, monitor students' reading progress, design your small group instruction, and much more!

Effective Teaching Practices for Mathematical Success (K-12); 8:30 - 11:30am Presenter: Celine Liu
All teachers who attend this session will have opportunities to engage in and incorporate effective mathematics teaching practices such as posing purposeful questions, launching productive discussions, and reflecting on the Standards for Mathematical Practice as outlined in California’s Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. We will introduce tools and techniques to promote deliberate academic conversations that in turn help each student make sense of their thinking and promote a robust understanding of the math concept. You will walk away with Teacher and Student Discourse Moves to help make that happen in your classrooms with our core curriculum. 

Designing for Rigorous & Playful Learning in TK; (TK) 8:30 - 11:30am  Presenter: Sally Barry

Planning for Integrated ELD in Newcomer Content Classes (6-12); 8:30 - 11:30am  Presenter: Laura Einhorn & Sarah Ansari
As teachers of newcomers, we have the dual responsibility of supporting our students' development of English language proficiency while also ensuring their mastery of our subject area content. To accomplish this, understanding the language demands and developing integrated lesson objectives is key. This session is targeted at content teachers within our newcomer pathway at SLHS but is open to anyone who teaches multilingual scholars (so, all of us!). Please bring a lesson plan that you will teach in the upcoming school year and your ideas and best practices to share.

Explore the Wonders of Wonders/Maravillas! (K-5); 8:30 - 11:30am  Presenter: Rachel Vatannia
Participants in this session will explore the adopted K-5 ELA/ELD/SLA curriculum to understand the various components and enhance their ability to design learning experiences that invite and support all students. This will include building knowledge of the components used by teachers and students, a basic understanding of the digital teacher and student center, an overview of the instructional path, and supplemental resources that support comprehensive literacy instruction.

Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Training (Special Education Teachers: Invitation Only); 8:30 - 3:30pm (with a lunch break) Presenters: Eva Caraher & Michelle Turbin
In this session we will complete the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training for Nonviolent Intervention, including physical strategies which are used as a last resort. Nonviolent Crisis Intervention provides you with the skills to safely recognize and respond to everyday crisis situations. This is a required training for all Special Education Teachers, to be updated on a 3- year basis. A 2.5 hour online portion must be completed prior to attending this session.

Many Roads, One Destination: Providing Multiple Means of Engagement & Expression through Centers (6-12); 12:30 - 3:30pm Presenter: Teresa Liao
The Universal Design for Learning Framework reminds us that we can meet the learning goals in a myriad of ways and students thrive from having choice and flexibility in meeting their learning needs.  This workshop will help you set up centers in a secondary classroom to allow for student voice, choice with multiple means of engagement and expression of what they know.  As an experienced middle school and high school teacher, your presenter will support you with how to make this manageable and successful!

Amplify Science Foundations (K-8 and PreK/TK Separate Sessions) 12:30 - 3:30pm  Presenter: Amplify Science
Participants learn the essentials necessary to implement Amplify Science with success. Learn to navigate the digital Amplify Science and experience a model lesson.  There will be one session for K-5 teachers and a separate one for TK and PreK.

Sonday Reading Intervention Systems 1& 2 (K-5): 12:30 - 3:30pm  Presenter: Jennifer Fischer
Learn the essentials of the SDC, RSP and intervention reading system with Sonday 1 & 2. These systems offer structured, systematic, multisensory reading intervention for beginning and intermediate readers in reading levels through 8th grade. Each lesson uses proven Orton-Gillingham methods to provide effective intervention in small-group settings. Appropriate for SDC, RSP, and Elementary academy-time settings.  

Supporting Learning Differences in the General Education Classroom (TK-12) 12:30 - 3:30pm Presenter: Jessica Ortiz &  Doris Kwok
This session offers a brief introduction to general learning differences you'll see in the classroom (specific learning disabilities and other health impairments such as ADHD, ED, etc.), a set of simple strategies for day to day use, and methods of formatively assessing your students' learning.

Agents of Change: Setting the Conditions for Student Self Assessment & Agency (6-12) 8:30 - 11:30am  Presenter: Gaia Pine
We can't do the learning for them, students must be their own agents of change.  But we can play a big role in teaching students how to successfully guide their own learning paths.  This session will model interactive practices to make learning goals and success criteria clearer for students to internalize.  Then we will explore strategies that help students monitor their learning over time to guide their next steps.  Ideally come with your course-alike collaboration partner. [note: repeated session from the PD day with built-in time for implementation support] 

Oral Language Strategies for Designated ELD at Elementary, (TK-5) 8:30 - 11:30am  Presenter: Doris Castillo and Sally Barry

Because oracy is the foundation for literacy, the development of oral language is vital to the academic success of English Learners.  Join this session to discuss and uncover strategies for intentional oral language development in the designated ELD space.

CANCELLED: Integrated ELD at Secondary (6-12); 8:30 - 11:30am  Presenter: Cybele Camberos & Sarah Ansari  
This session is intended for all secondary content teachers serving English Learners in their classroom. In this session we will explore a variety of instructional strategies, practices and routines which support ELL students' access to grade-level content while advancing student language proficiency.

Strategies and Routines for Success in the SD Classroom (SPED TK-12); 8:30 - 11:30am  Presenter: Megan Patrick, Mae Coleman & Tiffany Rezvani
Set your SD classroom up for success! Learn the 7 prompt levels and prompt fading, the basics of PECS, Zones of Regulation, and the Functions of Behaviors to thoughtfully prepare your classroom environment for students to thrive. Additionally, learn about using Symobls to communicate with your students, and leave with resources and examples on the AAC Drive as well as knowledge on how to initiate an AAC assessment!    Session highly recommended for SPED teachers new to SLUSD.

Eureka Math Training (K-5) 8:30 - 11:30am  Presenter: Eureka Math
This session prepares new users to implement Eureka Math successfully. Educators explore the curriculum to understand how the learning design and lessons build a comprehensive and coherent understanding of mathematics.

IEP Writing 101 and Utilizing SEIS Case-Management Systems (SPED TK- 12); 12:30 - 3:30pm  Presenter: Jessica Ortiz & Doris Kwok
"This interactive IEP writing session and introduction to SEIS will give participants the tools they need to draft effective IEPs.  In this session, we will cover the IEP process, including drafting and running IEP meetings. The topics range from communicating with parents, writing data driven IEP goals, proper services, accommodations and modifications, as well as the legal compliance of the IEP.
Session highly recommended for SPED teachers new to SLUSD.

Eureka Math Training (6-8) 12:30 - 3:30pm  Presenter: Eureka Math
This session prepares new users to implement Eureka Math successfully. Educators explore the curriculum to understand how the learning design and lessons build a comprehensive and coherent understanding of mathematics.

Amplify Science:  Seminar & Argumentation (6-8) 12:30 - 3:30pm  Presenter: Amplify Science
Participants will dive deeper into the argumentation and reasoning tools through the seminar lessons in middle school science.

Compensation

Current SLUSD teachers can choose between the SLTA hourly rate or Professional Growth Units (PGUs). New SLUSD teachers and substitute teachers (2023-2024) will be paid at the substitute half or full day pay. Para-educators who attend will be paid at the hourly rate per contract.
