Below are brief descriptions of instructor services.
Every semester, UWS sends part-time staff, graduate assistants, and undergraduate writing consultants to each section of ENGL 1500, 1900, 1920, and 4000 which encompasses the Writing Program housed in the Department of English at SLU. The writing consultant then gives a brief presentation (approximately 15 minutes) explaining the mission behind the writing center, the FREE services that we offer to under/graduate students, and how to schedule appointments using EAB Navigate - Student located under Applications on the Okta dashboard.
The justification behind this informational visit is to encourage students to start writing early in the semester, to view writing as a communal as opposed to a solitary act, to be comfortable asking for assistance when needed, and to help them further develop a writerly persona (outside of class) by introducing them to new rhetorical strategies in a one-on-one setting with the hope that they will become self-directed learners. We hope that the writing skills these students acquire will also extend beyond the classroom and set the tone not only for the remainder of their academic careers at Saint Louis University, but in their respective fields and professions post-graduation.
UWS collaborates with faculty, staff, adjuncts, and graduate assistants in order to foster a culture of critically conscientious writers on campus. We can tailor any of the workshops listed below to the expectations of each course and the needs of the students.

Note: Instructors teaching asynchronous courses can receive workshop recordings and materials if they are enrolled in the Embedded Consultant Program. See below for additional information.
The Embedded Consultant Program is a semester-long partnership between UWS and a Writing Program instructor. The primary purpose is for students to meet with the same person over an extended period of time, an embedded consultant who has more knowledge about their specific course and assignment expectations than any other staff member at the writing center.
Every partnership is unique. The program can be tailored to the expectations of each course and the needs of the students. It is entirely customizable.
After an embedded consultant is assigned, the instructor will share their syllabus and 1+ assignments (along with any corresponding rubrics or grading criteria) with the writing center. They will then have the option to review these materials with the embedded consultant either in-person, asynchronously, or via Zoom. This means that the embedded consultant will have a greater understanding of the overall course objectives and individual assignment expectations. Furthermore, the embedded consultant will facilitate a 15-minute introduction about University Writing Services and any other workshops requested by the instructor, implying that students will have the opportunity to get to know their embedded consultant on multiple occasions during their regularly scheduled class time.
Not only do we hope that this will increase student confidence and maximize student learning, but that it will also improve their willingness to seek feedback during any stage of the writing process both in and outside of the classroom.
Note: Embedded consultants are especially helpful for instructors who require or offer extra credit to students who visit the writing center.
