The Power of Storytelling

My project explores how storytelling can be a form of exercise intervention in physical therapy rehab and how physical therapists can be better listeners to their patients. One way we can utilize storytelling in healthcare is through journaling, which can be useful for patients to understand their medical narratives in relation to their life narratives. Other forms of storytelling discussed were music and art and how these can be incorporated into the clinic to positively influence recovery efforts. As a part of this project, I created and self-published a 30-day guided journal for patients with chronic illnesses who are going to physical therapy rehab. The journal is designed to help patients make sense of their medical and life narratives and to complement their physical therapy rehab.

Meena Chetty

Meena Chetty is a senior in the Physical Therapy Program at SLU and will be here for 2 more years to finish up her Doctorate of Physical Therapy. She is originally from Suwanee, Georgia and decided to attend SLU for the lovely, year-long, below-zero weather. During her time at SLU, she has served as a Path mentor, a physics SI, and a student research assistant. She was also on SLU Omkara, a classical Indian dance team on campus, and is currently their biggest fan.

This project would not have taken on the life that it did without Kim Levenhagen's unwavering support, expertise, and most importantly, her confidence in Meena's vision and capabilities. Kim is someone who encourages all her students to explore their passions and provides them with the resources to make it a reality. From connecting Meena with colleagues that could provide insight on publishing a guided journal to proof-reading many drafts with many typos, Kim has been there for it all. Thank you for everything, Kim!
