Purpose of the Literacy Festival
The St. Luke's SPLASH Literacy Festival began in 2009 with a visit from our first author, Tedd Arnold. It was founded to inspire our students (with the support of their families) to develop their literacy skills, to discover a passion for books, and to become lifelong readers, hence the acronym "St. Luke's Promotes Literacy At School and Home."
Sharon Coe
The St. Luke's SPLASH Literacy Festival was renamed in 2019 after a beloved former St. Luke's teacher, Sharon Coe. Mrs. Coe had a passion for children, Jesus, and reading that was evident to all who knew her.
Her husband, Jim Coe (also a former teacher and Music Director here), began a foundation in 2019 to support the Literacy Festival and to honor Sharon's legacy.
Here's an excerpt from the speech given at the foundation's kickoff: "Sharon was a tireless and unwavering supporter of reading and literacy programs for children, and she poured her heart into each child that she served. It’s not everyday that nationally-known authors visit a private school, but they visit St. Luke’s in part because Sharon made sure this Festival was a priority. "
