Google Meet Getting Started

FAQ & Tips from Districts

  • Can I prevent students from joining a Meet I sent them to the link to (via email or Calendar event) before I join it?
Not really. You could wait to provide access to students until you’ve joined the room already.

  • Can I prevent students from re-entering a closed Meet after I leave it?
Kind of - if you give the Meet a nickname, and then students use only the nickname to join your Meet (do not share the web address) and then make sure you are the last one to leave the Meet at the end - you may even want to remove the students manually - then students shouldn’t be able to re-join.

    BUT
nicknames will only work within your domain (for users with your district's email addresses - so if you are a BOCES CTE teacher, this trick may not work for you.)

  • H/T - Madrid-Waddington: Recording Meets
To make sure students behave themselves during your video conversations, always set the Meet to record and announce to all the students that you are recording it when you join the session.

  • Does Google Meet have a whiteboard feature?
No. But you can share your screen while using another whiteboard program like Smart Notebook, Chrome Canvas, or Jamboard (if your district has it enabled.) For more information and demos of Canvas and Jamboard, please refer to Eric Curts' video at the top of the page.

  • Can I show a video to my students while presenting my screen over Google Meet and have the audio work?
UPDATE: As of 5/1, Meet users should be able to present videos that play smoothly and have the audio included for their meeting participants to hear. To make this work, presenters should select the "Present a Chrome Tab" option in the present menu.

  • Does Google Meet integrate with Classroom?
As of April 9th, there is now some integration with Meet in Google Classroom. It basically creates a Meet link that lives in your class and can be reused whenever you need it without needing to make a new link each time.

The techniques used to prevent students from using the Meet without you still will need to be used.

Please refer to Eric Curts' video above to see what this looks like and how it works.

  • Can I see my class all at once in Google Meet (a "Brady Bunch" view?)
As of 5/1, Meet users should have the option to view up to 16 participants on the screen at once.
Instructions for how to enable this view can be found here.
