My personal connection to the St. Louis scene. ~Joseph Hosea

In 1998, I moved to Chicago to pursue an education.  I had no idea I would learn so much about, not only the world, but about life and myself. After graduation and some rather successful career moves, things changed and I moved home to St. Louis in 2005.  Places like the Complex, Faces, and Attitudes helped me re-integrate as an adult and member of the community. Later, JJ's Clubhouse and Bad Dog gave me permission to love myself and relate to my leather side. To express myself. To be who I was meant to be.

As I returned to school to become a teacher, I thought to myself, "When I retire, I'm going to open a bar". Fast-forward to 2021, and that boy's favorite home bar was sold. The places in which I truly felt that I belonged, in which I could be myself, were gone.  I no longer had a sanctuary to fully express myself.  Between covid and other changes in my life, I decided now was the time to act.

Just like me, I'm sure we all have fond memories of growing up and hanging out with friends at the clubs and in 'our spaces', in places where we belong - and we continue to do the same now, even if we're a little older.  We at Slick Willy's want to provide an establishment that is reminiscent of those cherished memories and offer the same to a whole new generation of the community.

While some LGBT+ bars across the country may not have fared as well, it seems the ones in St. Louis have thrived!  

But, as the business owners retired and business were sold, some were left wondering where they should go. It is up to the next generation to take up the mantle of representing the community and find a home for all of its members.

Slick Willy’s is ready to fill the void and become that safe-haven for the LGBT+ community.
