A STARS Mentor is someone who provides a young person with support, friendship, and a positive example. STARS Mentors want to help young people reach their full potential.
Mentors could be from every walk of life. As long as you can give one hour per week and have the willingness to share your gifts and talents, you can be a mentor.
BECAUSE IT WORKS! Young people want to spend time with positive, successful adult role models. They want guidance in setting and achieving goals. A STARS mentoring relationship works two ways. You have the opportunity to gain insight from young people; helping them succeed is great resource of satisfaction.
STARS, a mentoring organization, was founded in 2016 in Storm Lake, Iowa as a part of the Storm Lake Community School District (SLCSD). The first mentoring program was established in 2004 under the direction of Pat Cowan and Cindy Johnson under the name of CONNECTIONS.
This board was brought together by a common belief that all youth in their community could benefit from additional meaningful adult relationships and influence as well as academic and career guidance. The STARS Mentoring Program has been fortunate to continue the mentoring partnership with SLCSD and to serve the youth in this community.
The STARS Mentoring Program currently operates a school-based, one-on-one program within the Middle School and High School. STARS also partners with Buena Vista University BV Buddies program to provide expanded mentors to community youth.
Storm Lake STARS Mentoring Board Members, the Storm Lake Community School District, SLCSD Foundation, and Buena Vista University intend to carry out the STARS vision and expand the scope of the program services.
Both youth and mentors benefit from the mentoring relationship. Mentees benefit from a relationship based on trust and confidence, improving their academic performance, school attendance, and attitude towards school and home. Mentors report they get as much, if not more, out of the relationship.
