What I did to this picture was I put it into to photoshop and I added an adjustment layer. What an adjustment layer does is it allows you to take the darker pixels that you don't want and remove them or if you want more shadows then it allows you to remove the white pixels. We also use a histogram to evaluate if there are more shadows or more brightness so that we can adjust the exposure.
