The Cause

"My momma always said, 'Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.'"

- Forrest Gump

Deforestation.

The high demand of chocolate is bringing deforestation to the table. In the Ivory Coast of West Africa, cocoa traders who sell to Mars, Nestlé, Mondelez and other big brands buy beans grown illegally inside protected areas. Since the 1960s , 80% of the rainforest has been reduced. The cacao bean is native to Mexico and other parts of Central and South America. It is now harvested in West Africa and Ghana.

Deforestation is acknowledged to be a worldwide problem. It is estimated that in a century, there won't be any rainforests in this world anymore! With the mass of destruction we are causing, global warming increases. However, deforestation is not the only topic we must worry about.

There’s no more chocolate being sold because of deforestation protests. Without chocolate, we rid of a food that is beneficial to us, such as being able to improve heart health, having potential in preventing cancer, and having the ability to gain better cognitive functions.

With these reasons, we NEED to protect trees from chocolate, but also protect chocolate from tree protests.

This video helps explain the importance of rainforests. As the world lusts for that guilty pleasure, CHOCOLATE, its global demand is causing alarming levels of deforestation in the Ivory Coast. The West-African nation is the worlds biggest producer of chocolate, as a result, 80 percent of its rainforests have been destroyed since 1960.

One way, we're going to help is to become part of the solution. The San Leandro Multimedia Academy (SLAM) is having a Fast for Nonviolence campaign to help spread awareness to different problems in our society. By collaborating the ideas with Ticking Giants, we are going to attempt to tickle deforestation. Here we have created this website, graphics, a Twitter account, and a promotional video to communicate this problem globally. Want to support our other Fast for Nonviolence campaigns? Click Here!
