Safe Spaces: Ensuring Visibility and Equity for All

Research has shown that students succeed in the classroom when their learning communities affirm and support their sense of identity, safety, and mental and emotional well being. An effective method for ensuring this is through the creation of “safe spaces.” A safe space is an environment where often a marginalized group and its allies finds community and solace through shared experience. In this training, educators will have the opportunity to learn the relevant language and take steps towards establishing and cultivating these safe spaces in order to enrich the students’ lives and school outcomes. Incorporating safe spaces can result in improved school attendance, student participation, and a positive, all-inclusive school culture.
