As we begin this year we are resetting and rebooting after a pandemic year. Our District commits to the following:

1) Students as the core

2) Emotional wellbeing of students and staff.

3) Parent engagement

4) Communication

5) Student engagement

Skykomish School District works together with students, parents and the community to provide what they need to succeed, empower and inspire as contributing members of society. We will create a safe, academic, and rigorous learning environment with high expectations that is tailored to our students, their skills and interests.

Stevens Pass Academic Excellence Program

by DeLana Slone

Stevens Pass is pleased to offer the Academic Excellence Program (AEP) season passes to eligible students and we are thrilled to be teaming up with them again this year. The purpose of this program is to give students incentive to achieve in school while providing an opportunity to participate in winter recreation.

The AEP Season Pass provides unlimited access to Stevens Pass during the 2021-22 season. Letters went home last month to those students that qualify. AEP season passes are available to order over the phone at 206-812-4510. Renewing pass holders can use their existing passes. First time pass holders will receive their passes via mail. Stevens Pass will mail out passes after opening date; however, if you visit us before your pass arrives, they can reprint your pass at the mountain. Please contact DeLana Slone for more information.

Monthly Reading Challenge

by DeLana Slone

Students in K-8th grade are encouraged to read at least 20 minutes per day, 20 times per week. Reading forms are sent home on the first day of the month to be initialed by parents or guardians. Students can read themselves or be read to. Each month that your child reads, their name will go into a hat for the end of the year drawing for a prize from our local Skykomish Masons. The past several years, the prizes have been Kindle Fire tablets.

High school students are also committing to read, and Mrs. Tegan Slone has set up a reading challenge for 9th 12th grade students. The high school students have opted for a cash prize for their award this year.

The students who completed the challenge for September and turned in their forms are: Gianna, Cora L., Greyson, RJ, Jason, Tia, Benjamin, Peter, Luca M., and Weston M. Each of these students also received a new book for completing the challenge. We will also be having an end of year party to celebrate all of our Rocket Readers. Please encourage your child to read at home. Reading forms are due on the last day of each month.

If you have any questions or need reading forms please come to the office or call at 360-677-2623 x 100.

Sports

Skykomish Cross Country Team

Middle School Cross Country

In the month of October, 7th grader Marco Laverde, and 8th grader Madeline Luker, participated in three cross country races. These events were held in Arlington, Sultan, and Whidbey Island. It has been a great experience, and they are looking forward to another meet on November 20th. Both runners have been competitive, and we are very proud on how they have represented Skykomish. Special thanks to Allison Luker for coaching and supervising.

Here is what Madeline had to say:

"The trails have been fun, and it’s been great to go to different locations and meet other runners."

Here is what Marco had to say:

"It’s been good, and I never thought that running two miles without stopping would be fun."

Way to go TEAM and coaches!

From the Counselor

Sonia Bartosek, School Counselor

Social Emotional Skills have come to the forefront in education during this pandemic. Social Emotional Learning is taking place in a variety of ways at school. Skykomish has incredible administration, teachers, and staff who work with your child(ren) throughout each day to ensure they are learning to be the best version of themselves. The entire school utilizes the Leader in Me curriculum as well; it is based on 7 Habits: 1. Be proactive, 2. Begin with the end in mind, 3. Put first things first, 4. Think win-win, 5. Seek first to understand, then be understood, 6. Synergize, and 7. Sharpen the Saw.

Skykomish students, staff, and families are also able to interact and work closely with the school Intervention Specialist, Mrs. Rosemary Mitchell. She works on creating the necessary resiliency skills all students need as they mature. She is a valuable resource for students and parents who need assistance of any kind and helps organize events at school and in the community.

In addition, Mrs. Sonia Bartosek, school counselor, works with grades K-3 using the Second Step curriculum. The Second Step curriculum is divided by grade level and covers 1. Skills for Learning (focusing attention, listening, using self-talk, and being assertive), 2. Empathy (identifying and understanding their feelings along with the feelings of others, looking at another’s point of view, and showing compassion), 3. Emotion Management (calming down strong feelings), and 4. Problem solving (for themselves and with others). Mrs. Allison Luker also uses this program with our pre-school students, too.

The 4th and 5th grade students begin with a refresher of the Second Step concepts with the school counselor and then move on to the Purposeful People curriculum. This curriculum is also divided into grade level groups. It is based on activities surrounding 10 core values: Courage, Respect, Perseverance, Gratitude, Honesty, Kindness, Empathy, Responsibility, Cooperation, & Creativity.

Middle school students move into Character Strong. Character Strong has both Middle & High School curricula based on the 8 values of Commitment, Forgiveness, Honesty, Humility, Kindness, Patience, Respect, and Selflessness. In middle school, students learn and discuss the qualities of community building, exploring values, perspective, empathy, emotional regulation, conflict resolution, personal well-being, self-acceptance, teamwork, and school leadership skills. In addition, middle school students work on career readiness skills with both the school counselor and their teacher by exploring the requirements of the High School and Beyond plan utilizing Career Guidance Washington.

High school students work with their advisor who intertwines the 8 principles of Character Strong along with college and career readiness skills by working on the requirements for the High School & Beyond Plan. They also utilize the Career Guidance Washington curriculum. The school counselor works with the advisors and students to assist with the transition to and from high school.

Highly Capable Program Selection Process

What is it?

Highly Capable Services are designed for students who perform or show potential for performing at significantly advanced academic levels when compared with others of their age, experiences, or environments.

Successful candidates are often independent learners who thrive on progressively challenging opportunities, utilize advanced problem- solving, and enjoy in-depth study and presentation of the curriculum. Students qualifying for Highly Capable Services shall receive appropriate curriculum and instruction to meet their academic needs.

Who can be nominated?

Any student grades Kindergarten through 12th grade who lives in the Skykomish School District boundaries.

Who can nominate students?

Nominations for the Highly Capable Program may come from parents, teachers, school staff, students, and other community members.

Call or email for a nomination form:

Sonia Bartosek, School Counselor

(360) 677-2623 ext. 201 / sbartosek@skykomish.wednet.edu

What’s next?

Once a referral is received, you will receive a nomination form to complete. In addition, the counselor will review current standardized testing and grades. A Gifted and Talented Evaluation Scale (GATES) will be provided to the student’s teacher. This is a norm-referenced rating scale which identifies Intellectual Ability, Academic Skills, Creativity, Leadership, and Artistic Talent in comparison to average students their age. An additional screener, the Screening Assessment for Gifted Elementary and Middle School Students (SAGES-3) will be given to K-8 students by the counselor.

Following the screening process, if a committee determines it is possible the student may qualify for Highly Capable Services, the parent/guardian will be provided further information about the program. The parent/guardian then decides whether or not they want their child formally assessed and must provide written permission.

Mexican Folk Art

Students in 1st through 3rd grade created a Moon/Sun Folk Art from Mexico. Students reviewed that Mexico is a country with its own language and money. They also learned how to use markers with water to create "paint." The students practiced lines, shapes, patterns, and cool colors verses warm colors. A lot of time and effort went into this artwork, and they turned out beautiful.
