About me
I am looking forward to another year as a Rocket! This is my 5th year in Washington as a school counselor. I have been a high school math teacher, a special education teacher, and a school counselor in other states for over 20 years, most recently Mississippi before returning to Washington.
I have my EdS (Education Specialist) degree in School Counseling, have earned my NCC (National Certified Counselor) and NCSC (National Certified School Counselor) credentials, and most recently American School Counseling certifications as a Mental Health Specialist, Trauma & Crisis Management Specialist, and Stress & Anxiety Specialist.
I live in Washington with my husband, my mom, and 3 rescued dogs. I have 2 boys; both live in Florida.

While confidentiality is always the goal, in a remote setting, I am unable to control what others may see or hear on others' computers. In addition, as always, there are limits to confidentiality, particularly when there are reports or suspicion of harm to self, harm to others, or when others are hurting you. I am required by law to report those incidents.

Mindfulness / Mindful Moments
You will hear a lot about "Mindfulness" and "Mindful Moments", but what are they?
Merriam-Webster defines Midfulness as: "the practice of maintaining a nonjudgmental state of heightened or complete awareness of one’s thoughts, emotions, or experiences on a moment-to-moment basis.”
Cambridge Dictionary defines mindfulness as: "the practice of being aware of your body, mind, and feelings in the present moment, thought to create a feeling of calm.”
MIndful Moments invite people to become self-aware of their present through the principles of Grounding, Strength, Listening, Stillness, and Community to help one have greater control over their life through developing focus and concentration skills.
According to Yoga Calm:
Grounding helps us be physically present in the body and develop a sense of competence and physical safety
Strength (physical, emotional, and mental) help develop capability, confidence, and self-esteem
Listening is developing a sense of sel-regulation, imagingation, and self-understanding and involves the heart, mind, and body
Stillness is to become self-aware, sensitive, develop self-control ad self-regulation by quieting the mind and body
Community is developing compassion and communication skills along with the ability to both give and receive support.

Best Starts for Kids, School-Based SBIRT Check-Yourself Screener Information
Because our school is part of King County, we have the distinct pleasure of getting to work with the Best Start For Kids program. Part of that program is a mental health screener that is provided to middle and high school students at participating schools to assist with not only our students' health and well-being, but research for these age groups through Seattle Children's Hospital. A letter will be sent home yearly along with an opt out form. Students are identified through a numeric code only on the survey and any information sent to Seattle Children's is compiled with all students in King County as a whole. The screener does have a question on it asking if the student would like to speak to a counselor at school. If the child answers yes, that information is "flagged" for view. The other information that might "flag" for review will be if a student answers high on the anxiety or depression questions or responds they are thinking about hurting themselves or someone else. These flags have been built into the system as a safety measure, so I will get a notification to check on the student.
The questions and information on the screener are prescriptive, meaning that what questions a student receives is based upon how they answer questions or if they ask for further information about a topic. A copy for you to preview can be accessed through through this link: Check Yourself School Based (tickitforhealth.com)
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
