The Prevention Council, led by students and school counselors, is dedicated to preventing dangerous and unhealthy behaviors among students, including underage drinking, drug use, bullying, suicide, dating violence, and eating disorders. They organize and/or assist with activities throughout the year, such as those during Red Ribbon Week, April's Drug and Alcohol Awareness Activities, Suicide Prevention planning, Youth Frontiers events, and other school-wide prevention efforts. With varying levels of involvement, even the most active students can contribute to the council's mission.
Red Ribbon Week is a national drug awareness and prevention campaign observed in the United States each year. It typically takes place during the last week of October. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the dangers of substance abuse and encourage healthy choices among young people. A red ribbon is worn as a symbol of solidarity and commitment to a drug-free lifestyle.
During Red Ribbon Week, schools, communities, and organizations across the country hold various events and activities to promote drug awareness and prevention. These may include:
Educational programs: Schools and community groups often organize educational programs about the dangers of substance abuse, the effects on the body and mind, and the importance of making healthy choices.
Community events: Many communities host events such as parades, rallies, and concerts to raise awareness and show support for a drug-free lifestyle.
Wear red: Participants are encouraged to wear red ribbons or red clothing to show their commitment to the cause.
Drug-free pledges: Students and community members can take pledges to remain drug-free.
Red Ribbon Week is an important opportunity to educate young people about the dangers of substance abuse and to promote healthy choices. By participating in the campaign, individuals can help to create a safer and healthier community for everyone.
Youth Frontiers is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering young people to become positive leaders. Through their experiential learning programs, teens can develop essential leadership skills, build character, and create lasting positive change. Youth Frontiers offers leadership camps, school-based programs, community initiatives, and staff development opportunities. The organization's core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, compassion, and courage guide their mission to create a positive impact on the lives of young people.
Throughout the year, Prevention Council strives to implement various drug and alcohol awareness activities to educate students about the dangers of substance abuse and promote healthy choices. These activities may include guest speakers, educational presentations, role-playing scenarios, community service projects, drug-free pledges, awareness campaigns, movie screenings, and/or parent-student workshops. By participating in these activities, students can develop the knowledge and skills they need to make informed decisions about their health and well-being. We have worked with the Nebraska State Patrol, the FBI, the Omaha Police Department Project Nightlife, and Immanuel Rehab Hospital to bring programming to our students.
