About the Course
ACADEMIC YEAR 2026-27
Solid Mechanics is a fundamental course in civil engineering that deals with the behaviour of solid materials and structural members when subjected to various types of external loads. The course provides a theoretical and analytical foundation for understanding how engineering materials resist applied loads, develop stresses and strains, and undergo deformation.
The course introduces the concepts of stress, strain, elasticity, material properties, axial loading, shear force, bending moment, bending stresses, shear stresses, torsion, principal stresses, columns and buckling, and deflection of beams. Students learn to analyse structural members and assess their strength, stiffness, stability, and serviceability under different loading conditions.
The knowledge gained from Solid Mechanics is essential for subsequent courses such as Structural Analysis, Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures, Design of Steel Structures, and Structural Design, and helps students develop the ability to design safe, stable, and efficient engineering structures.
