About the Course
Fluid mechanics is a branch of mechanics that studies fluids and the forces on them. Fluid mechanics examines fluids in two subsystems: static and dynamic. Fluids, and especially air and water, have a major role in the life of creatures, and 65% of our body is composed of water. It can be divided into fluid statics, the study of fluids at rest, and fluid dynamics, the study of the effect of forces on fluid motion.
IMPORTANCE OF FLUID MECHANICS AND HYDRAULICS MACHINERY
Understanding of fluid flow: FM helps understand the behaviour and movement of liquids and gases in pipes, channels, and open spaces.
Water supply systems: Principles of FM are essential for designing water distribution and pumping systems.
Hydraulic structures: FM concepts are used in the design of dams, canals, spillways, and irrigation systems.
Design of pipelines: Helps determine pipe size, pressure loss, flow velocity, and discharge.
Foundation for hydraulic engineering: FM provides the basic concepts required for understanding hydraulic engineering applications.
Efficient water pumping: HM helps in understanding and selecting pumps for water supply and irrigation.
Power generation: Hydraulic turbines are widely used for generating hydroelectric power.
Industrial applications: Pumps and turbines are used extensively in industries for transporting and controlling fluids.
Machine selection: Knowledge of HM helps engineers select suitable pumps and turbines based on discharge and head requirements.
Energy conversion: Hydraulic machines demonstrate the conversion of hydraulic energy into mechanical energy and vice versa.
Practical engineering skills: FM and HM together help civil engineers design, operate, and maintain water and fluid-handling systems.
