About the Course
Engineering Geology and Soil Identifications Lab is an Ability Enhancement Course (AEC) offered by Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) for undergraduate Civil Engineering students. The course provides practical knowledge of rocks, minerals, geological structures, and soils through laboratory experiments and field-based identification techniques.
The laboratory enables students to identify and classify geological materials, determine basic engineering properties of soils, and understand the influence of subsurface conditions on the planning, design, and construction of civil engineering projects such as foundations, dams, tunnels, roads, and slopes.
By emphasizing observation, analysis, testing, and technical reporting, the course strengthens students’ practical skills and prepares them for geotechnical investigations, site characterization, and professional engineering practice.
· Hands-on identification of rocks, minerals, and soils
· Laboratory testing of engineering properties of soils
· Study of geological structures relevant to civil engineering
· Development of observation, analytical, and reporting skills
