We will explore the responsibilities and rights of faculty inside and outside of the classroom, some of the relevant higher education case law, and when others on campus should be consulted.

A Brainstorming Session on Creating a Focused Learning Environment in the Face of Disruptions by Dr. Stacy Olitsky, Teacher Education; Dr. Jeff Hyson, History; Dr. Ruben Mendoza, Decision and System Sciences
For many faculty, this semester has involved frequent disruptions to the learning environment, including changes in students' quarantine status, shifts in students' learning modalities, technological difficulties, and our own personal responsibilities. Despite -- or because of -- these disruptions, we must work even harder to build a supportive learning community and to maintain high expectations in the face of unprecedented challenges and often-changing routines. In this session, we explore and brainstorm strategies for engaging students and creating productive learning environments through these ongoing disruptions.
Academic Integrity by Dr. Jeff Bone, Management; Dr. Pat Garrigan, Psychology; Dr. Elaine Shenk, Modern and Classical Languages; and Andy Starr, IT;
This session focuses on our collective efforts to promote and facilitate academic integrity in the classroom and beyond. We will share overall strategies that may be relevant to all teaching modalities, with a particular awareness of our current context in which we are teaching F2F, hybrid/blended, hyflex, and fully online. We will describe several technological resources available to faculty (with pros/cons), and some common pitfalls that faculty and students may encounter regarding issues of academic integrity. There will be some open time to share proactive ideas that have worked in your classroom to promote academic integrity, so please bring your ideas to this discussion as well.
2020 Title IX Regulations: Implications for Higher Education and the SJU Community by Dr. Alexandra Morrison, Title IX and Equity Compliance.
In May of 2020, the U.S. Department of Education issued final regulations implementing Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972, that signaled a drastic departure from previous guidance on how colleges and universities must respond to allegations of sexual harassment, sexual violence, and other forms of sex- and gender-based misconduct. This session will provide an overview of significant changes under the regulations, and discuss the practical impact on SJU students, faculty, and staff members.
10:45-11:30 AM | Session 3
Guided Self-Reflection for the Online and Hybrid Teacher by Dr. Aubrey Wang, Educational Leadership; Dr. Alison Williams Lewin, History
This session intends to guide faculty to examine their own practices as an online and hybrid teacher, deepen their awareness of the ways they made connections with their core teaching values and the strengths of their students, and generate ideas on ways to continue to grow as an online and hybrid teacher.
Let’s get engaged! Cultivating community quickly in any teaching modality by Dr. Ken Weidner, Management; Karen Pinto, OIT; Chontel Delaney, OIT
It’s never been more important for students to make connections with their peers and become academically engaged. Learn how to accomplish this (and more) using “What do you geek out about, and why?” a low/no-stakes exercise for students to create 1 minute video presentations.
Hybrid/Hyflex Teaching: Challenges and Resources- Dr. John Yi, Decision and System Sciences; Dr. Ruben Mendoza, Decision and System Sciences; Dr. Janine Firmender, Teacher Education
Possibly the biggest hurdle facing faculty teaching in these modes is the bewildering array of technology options which can both enable and limit pedagogy. Moreover, effectively and actively engaging both in person and online students in these modes of teaching are of paramount focus. Arriving at a stable set of practices is not too difficult, but any problems which arise during live sessions may be hard to solve with our usual panache. We will share our experiences doing this, the issues we have faced (some of which we are still working on solving), and we will all learn from each other. Semper Gumby!
