Plot Summary: Magdalena “Mags” Herrera is preparing to graduate high school while juggling caring for her grandmother, holding down a part time job, and hiding a dangerous secret, a creature tied to her life force, that emerges from her basement at night. The creature drains her physically and poses a mortal threat if ever revealed. But when her childhood friend Nessa returns to town, old memories and new feelings surface. As their relationship deepens, Mags must confront her grief over a past tragedy, face the darkness within, and make a pivotal choice: continue hiding or risk everything to live openly, authentically, and free from fear.

Critical Evaluation:
The Deep Dark is an intense and emotional graphic novel that blends queer romance and horror in a way that feels honest and real. The characters are well developed, especially Mags, who feels raw and relatable as someone just trying to stop their life from falling apart. The setting feels grounded in reality, which makes the horror elements even more disturbing. The artwork is detailed and expressive, with great use of lighting and body language to show emotion and tension even in scenes without dialogue. The use of color is also expertly done, as much of the book is in black and white, showing how bleak the world is for Mags, before becoming colorized by the end to show her development over the course of the novel. The entire book is haunting in a way that sticks with you, not just because of the monster, but because of how much you care about these girls and what they’re going through. There’s also some really strong LGBTQ+ symbolism in the way the monster represents shame, fear, and the physical toll of hiding your identity, especially for queer teens growing up in unsupportive households. It’s a story about survival, love, and choosing to face the darkest parts of yourself instead of running from them.
Creative Use for a Library Program:
A library program around The Deep Dark could be hosting a teen graphic novel night that combines a book discussion with creative and reflective activities. Teens can talk about the story’s themes, like grief, identity, and internalized fear, then explore them through blackout poetry, zine making, or drawing their own “inner monsters” as a form of expression. There could also be a brief intro to graphic novel storytelling, showing how art and text work together to build emotion. Partnering with a local mental health organization or LGBTQ+ support group could add a layer of community connection and support.

Speed Round Book Talk:
If you’re into graphic novels that mix horror, romance, and drama, The Deep Dark is one you don’t want to miss. It follows Mags, a teen with a terrifying secret literally living in her basement, as she tries to balance the responsibilities in her life while falling back in love with the girl who broke her heart. It’s haunting, heartfelt, and totally unforgettable.
Potential Issues:
There are a few potential issues to consider when planning a library program around The Deep Dark. The book includes heavy themes like self harm, grief, emotional trauma, and queer identity, which might be triggering or upsetting for some participants. Parents or community members might also raise concerns about the horror elements or the portrayal of LGBTQ+ relationships and symbolism. Since the book doesn’t shy away from intense emotional content, it’s important to create a safe, supportive environment and clearly advertises the age range and topics in advance. Providing content warnings and optional support resources prior to the event can help address these concerns.

Reason for Inclusion:
I chose to include The Deep Dark because it’s a powerful example of how graphic novels can explore complex emotional experiences through both story and art. It offers meaningful LGBTQ+ representation, deals with grief and identity in a way that feels honest and relevant to teens, and uses horror as a metaphor for internal struggles that many young readers will relate to. Its recognition as a Printz Honor book also highlights its literary merit and impact. This title stands out for its emotional depth, unique visual storytelling, and the way it creates space for difficult but important conversations.
