Plot Summary: Clark Kent is already settled into his double life as a reporter at the Daily Planet and Superman when Lex Luthor’s latest schemes begin threatening, not just Metropolis, but the fragile trust between its people and their hero. While chasing leads with Lois Lane, Clark juggles late-night rescues, newsroom deadlines, and the ongoing question of where he truly belongs as someone caught between Earth and Krypton. As danger escalates, his fight becomes personal, forcing him to confront the weight of his legacy and the kind of hero he wants to be. Along the way, he gets help from unexpected allies, including his loyal, yet poorly trained, super powered dog, Krypto, while uncovering a plot that could change the future of Metropolis and the world forever. With Luthor closing in and the city in jeopardy, Clark must prove that hope, compassion, and doing the right thing still matter in a world that isn’t always sure it wants saving.
Creator Background:
James Francis Gunn Jr. (born August 5, 1966, in St. Louis, Missouri) is a celebrated American filmmaker, screenwriter, producer, and studio executive. His early work included writing and co-directing the cult classic Tromeo & Juliet (1996) at Troma Entertainment and directing the horror-comedy Slither (2006), before breaking into the mainstream with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) trilogy and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (2022) (James Gunn, n.d.). After a public fallout with Disney in 2018, he pivoted to DC and directed The Suicide Squad (2021) and its successful spinoff series Peacemaker (Sanza, 2025). In October 2022, he was named co‑chairman and co‑CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, charged with overseeing creative development across DC’s film, television, and animation projects (Mouriquand, 2022). His latest high‑profile effort includes writing and directing Superman (2025), the launch film for the newly restructured DC Universe (Fritz, 2025).

Critical Evaluation:
James Gunn’s Superman finally gives us a version of the character that actually feels like Superman. One that's hopeful, kind, and still figuring out how to exist in a world that doesn’t always value those traits. It’s got plenty of action and big, cinematic “Superman moments,” but it also slows down enough to show Clark as a person, not just a cape. David Corenswet completely sells the balance between awkward, dorky reporter and confident hero, and Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane steals every scene she’s in with her sharp banter and zero tolerance for nonsense. Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor is also unnervingly believable, making his obsession with Superman feel less cartoon villain and more like the villains we see in real life. The movie’s mix of heartfelt character beats, oddball comic book weirdness, and action spectacle works more often than not, though a few pacing hiccups and sudden tone shifts might throw some people. Overall, it’s a Superman story that’s both fresh and familiar, and it left me surprisingly excited for whatever DC releases next.
Creative Use for a Library Program:
A program around Superman could involve using the movie as a springboard for conversations about modern heroism, identity, and how pop culture shapes our idea of what makes a hero. Additionally, mixing in clips and comic panels to spark discussion, while comparing different versions of Superman and debating which one truly captures the character best could add an interesting debate to engage teens. From there, the event could shift into exploring the bigger DCU connections, giving fans a chance to speculate together about what might be coming next.

Speed Round Book Talk:
Superman drops us right into Clark Kent’s life as a young reporter in Metropolis, already juggling the cape and his life as a regular guy. But when Lex Luthor hatches a plan that threatens the city and challenges everything Superman stands for, Clark has to balance saving the world and holding onto his humanity, with a little help from Lois Lane and Krypto, the Superdog. It’s heartfelt, action-packed, and reminds you why Superman’s still the hero worth believing in.
Potential Issues:
Some potential issues with a teen program around Superman include the possibility that discussions about identity, morality, or the film’s political undertones could lead to disagreements or heated debates. The movie has also faced backlash from some viewers who feel it’s “too political,” which could prompt concerns from guardians or community members. Turnout might also be lower if teens aren’t into superhero media or are more invested in other fandoms, and if the program dives deep into DCU connections, there’s always the risk of spoilers for anyone who hasn’t seen the film yet.

Reason for Inclusion:
I chose to include Superman because it brings one of the most iconic superheroes back into the spotlight in a way that feels fresh, relevant, and accessible for today’s teens. James Gunn’s take keeps the character’s core values of hope and kindness while layering in themes of identity, belonging, and moral choice, topics that resonate strongly with young audiences. With its mix of action, humor, and heartfelt moments, the film offers plenty of starting points for discussion, whether it’s about heroism in a modern world, the role of media in shaping narratives, or how pop culture reflects current social issues. It’s also a major pop culture moment that many teens are already talking about, making it a natural way to spark engagement and connect library programming to their interests.
