Plot Summary: Charlie Fitzer, a broke substitute teacher and former journalist, inherits more than he bargained for when his estranged uncle, a secret supervillain, dies and leaves him a volcanic lair, genetically enhanced spy cats, and a tangled web of evil organizations. Suddenly thrust into a world of unionized dolphins, scheming villains, and high tech chaos, Charlie must navigate assassination attempts, underground summits, and unexpected betrayals. With the help of his uncle’s super serious assistant and some surprisingly resourceful animals, Charlie tries to stay alive, clear his name, and maybe even dismantle a corrupt villain empire along the way, all while figuring out if he actually wants to be a villain himself.

Critical Evaluation:
Starter Villain is a fast paced, funny, and delightfully absurd novel that plays with classic supervillain tropes, while still managing to tell a heartfelt story about identity and reinvention. Scalzi’s signature writing style and humor shines through throughout the novel, but beneath the humor is a surprisingly grounded protagonist in Charlie Fitzer. He's your average guy whose reluctant dive into villainy brings up real questions about power, legacy, and personal agency. While the plot leans heavily into satire and may feel a bit low stakes or just straight up ridiculous to readers looking for deeper world building or emotional complexity, the book excels at what it sets out to do, which is entertain. Scalzi does refer to it as a "pop song" of a novel, after all. It’s the kind of story that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but still leaves you thinking about the fine line between heroism, villainy, and doing what’s right when the world makes no sense.
Creative Use for a Library Program:
A library program around Starter Villain could look like a supervillain themed library night. Teens could come up with their own villain identities, and do some fun activities like create lair blueprints or silly gadgets. There could even be a mini game or activity where they have to form alliances or betray each other. The goal should be for them to have fun in a way that's goofy and chaotic, like the book.

Speed Round Book Talk:
Charlie Fitzer’s life flips upside down when his mysterious uncle dies and leaves him a legacy of villainy, complete with secret organizations, betrayal, and unexpected power. If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if an average guy suddenly inherited a volcano lair, unionized dolphins, and spy cats, Starter Villain is the hilarious, high stakes sci-fi comedy you didn’t know you needed.
Potential Issues:
Using Starter Villain for library programming could raise a few potential concerns. The book contains adult humor, mild profanity, and satirical takes on violence and villainy that might not be suitable for younger teens. Some patrons might also misunderstand the satirical tone and object to themes involving criminal activity, assassins, or weaponized animals. Additionally, the quirky, absurdist humor might not resonate with all participants, making it harder to engage a broad audience. Clear content warnings and thoughtful framing would be important to avoid confusion or complaints.

Reason for Inclusion:
I chose to include Starter Villain because it’s a fun, fast paced sci-fi novel that blends humor with sharp commentary, making it a great pick for engaging both teen and adult readers. Its originality, accessible writing style, and chaotic premise make it an easy hook for reluctant readers or those looking for something outside traditional genres. Plus, as a 2024 Alex Award winner, it’s been recognized specifically for its appeal to young adults, which aligns perfectly with the goals of this project.
