Summary: Tre Brun, a sophomore on the Red Lake Ojibwe Reservation in Minnesota, is trying to fill the shoes of his late older brother, Jaxon, who was the star of the high school basketball team before dying in a car accident earlier in the year. Still grieving his brother’s tragic death, Tre is given a chance to join the varsity team, where he hopes to lead his reservation to its first ever state championship. As he trains and plays, Tre navigates many external conflicts, ranging from harsh expectations from his community, racism, strained family dynamics, and falling in love with his friend Khiana. This emotionally charged debut combines fast paced basketball scenes with themes of grief, identity, resilience, cultural pride, and community.
Author:
Byron Graves is Ojibwe and Lakota, born and raised on the Red Lake Indian Reservation in northern Minnesota. He grew up surrounded by family, culture, and the outdoors. His love of storytelling started young, thanks to his mom’s made up bedtime stories and his own habit of interrupting them with plot twists and cameos until she finally told him to write his own. From poetry and song lyrics to comic books and novels, Byron has always been drawn to words. He has been writing and studying creative writing for over a decade, and his debut novel, Rez Ball, is inspired by his life on the rez and his love of basketball. It was released in 2023 and went on to win the William C. Morris Award and the American Indian Youth Literature Award. These days, he lives in Denver, where he writes, skateboards, plays retro video games, and takes care of his chaotic (and slightly stinky) cats.

Critical Evaluation:
Rez Ball is a fantastic debut that blends the intensity of sports fiction with a deeply emotional coming of age story. Byron Graves brings authenticity and heart to Tre’s journey, capturing the pressure of community expectations, the rawness of grief, and the power of cultural identity, without ever feeling preachy or forced. The basketball scenes are fast and exciting, but what really makes the novel shine is how grounded it is in the reality of life on the reservation. Graves doesn’t shy away from hard topics like substance abuse or racism, but handles them with care and respect. The writing is accessible and engaging, making it a strong pick for teen readers who want something that’s both relatable and meaningful. Rez Ball is the kind of book that lingers with you long after the last page.
Creative Use for a Library Program:
A library program around Rez Ball should start by partnering with local Indigenous organizations, artists, or elders. The event can include hands on activities like beadwork demos, zine making inspired by personal or ancestral stories, and storytelling circles that honor oral tradition. There could also be a discussion about the book and how basketball plays a powerful role in Native communities, both as a sport and a source of identity, pride, and healing. Partnering with a nearby gym or outdoor court for a fun, low intensity basketball competition with basketball themed prizes or giveaways would also be a great addition to the programming.

Speed Round Book Talk:
If you’re into fast paced sports stories with heart, Rez Ball is a must read. It follows Tre, a teen on the Red Lake Ojibwe Reservation, as he tries to honor his late brother’s legacy by leading his basketball team to victory. Packed with emotion, culture, and court drama, it’s a powerful story about grief, identity, and never giving up.
Potential Issues:
While Rez Ball is a powerful and authentic story, there are a few potential issues to consider when including it in library programming. The book addresses heavy topics like grief, substance abuse, and racism, which may be sensitive for some readers and could require thoughtful facilitation and content warnings. Additionally, programming that includes cultural elements, such as beadwork or storytelling, must be handled with respect and care, and should only be done in partnership with local Indigenous groups to ensure authenticity and to avoid appropriation. Being mindful of these aspects can help create a meaningful, respectful, and inclusive program.

Reason for Inclusion:
I chose to includeRez Ball because it offers a rare and very needed perspective in YA literature, as it tells an authentic, contemporary story about life on a Native American reservation written by an indigenous author. It powerfully blends sports, culture, grief, and resilience in a way that’s both accessible and emotionally resonant for teen readers. With award recognition and strong teen appeal, it’s a fantastic and critically acclaimed title that supports diverse collection development and encourages meaningful conversations about identity, community, and healing.
