Plot Summary: Ellery’s just trying to make it through another day in their small town, which has been stuck in an unending winter for five years, when Knox, a charming, infuriating magical familiar from another realm, crashes into their life. Knox needs a human anchor to survive in this world, and Ellery, despite being a skeptic who doesn’t buy into all this “Other World” business, ends up making a crossroads bargain to help him. What starts as a reluctant partnership turns into a slow, careful build of trust as they uncover why the winter hasn’t broken, dodge supernatural threats, and navigate feelings neither of them planned on having in the Orpheus and Eurydice inspired tale.
Author:
F.T. Lukens (they/them) is a New York Times bestselling author of queer YA speculative fiction. Some of their newer books books include In Deeper Waters, So This Is Ever After, Otherworldly, and Love at Second Sight, with several of their earlier works earning notable honors, including the Foreword INDIES Gold Award for YA Fiction and a spot on ALA’s Rainbow Book List. Growing up, Lukens daydreamed their stories into existence, starting with a third-grade short story about a knight rescuing a princess, and has been drawn to speculative, coming of age tales ever since. They’ve been influenced by everything, from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy to authors like Brian Jacques and Robert Jordan. When they’re not writing, you can find them crocheting amigurumi, diving into pop culture nostalgia, or chatting about books with their followers on Instagram. They live in North Carolina with their spouse, three kids, three dogs, and three cats (Kirichanskaya, 2022).

Critical Evaluation:
Otherworldly is one of those books that snuck up on me and I didn’t realize how hooked I was until I caught myself struggling to put it down. The small town setting, which is stuck in a five-year winter with no sign of ending, is the perfect mix of cozy and claustrophobic. The characters are also fantastic and Ellery, our stubborn and skeptical main character, feels so real. They’ve left their family’s struggling farm to work long hours washing dishes at the local diner, sending money home and avoiding anything that smells like trouble. Then Knox, a magical familiar on the run from his queen, crashes into Ellery's life. He's full of charm and banter, but clearly hiding something deeper. They’re total opposites in a lot of ways, but they’ve both built these walls around themselves, and watching them slowly take those down is one of the best parts of the story.
What really stuck with me is how the book keeps the focus on the characters, even with all the magic swirling around them. The crossroads bargains, the fine print, the dangerous rules of the Other World add just enough tension without overshadowing Ellery and Knox’s growth. The writing style also really adds to this, as it's easy to follow, but full of depth and beautiful prose. Otherworldly is a slow burn in the best way, and when the emotional moments hit at the end, they hit hard. I closed the book still thinking about these characters, and honestly, I’m still not quite ready to let them go.
Creative Use for a Library Program:
A library program around Otherworldly could play with the book’s wintery setting and crossroads bargains. It could be a more casual event with stations set up throughout the day. One could be a craft station for making frosted lanterns or snowflake charms, another could be a “fine print” riddle table, and a cozy corner for reading or chatting about favorite moments. Partnering with a local indie bookstore or LGBTQ+ group could make it even more fun with giveaways or themed book recs.

Speed Round Book Talk:
Otherworldly throws you into a small town trapped in a five-year winter, where magic is real but Ellery wants nothing to do with it. Then Knox, a charming, infuriating magical familiar on the run, crashes into their life, pulling them into a world of dangerous bargains and supernatural rules. It’s full slow burn trust, sharp banter, and the kind of emotional payoff that’ll stick with you long after you’re done.
Potential Issues:
One potential issue with that the story’s magic system revolves around crossroads bargains, which could be misinterpreted by community members as being tied to occult or witchcraft practices, leading to possible pushback. The book also includes LGBTQ+ representation, which unfortunately can still draw criticism in some areas.

Reason for Inclusion:
I chose to include Otherworldly because it’s a beautifully written blend of cozy fantasy, slow-burn romance, and heartfelt character growth, all wrapped in an accessible standalone story. It offers strong LGBTQ+ representation in a queer-normative world, making it an affirming and inclusive read for teens. The magic system is creative and easy to follow, the stakes are personal, and the relationships, both romantic and platonic, feel authentic. It’s the kind of book that can hook fantasy fans while still appealing to readers who care more about characters than world saving plots, and it leaves you thinking about trust, choice, and found family long after you finish.
