Critical Evaluation:
Mario Kart World on the Switch 2 is the kind of game that’s easy to sink hours into without realizing, and I definitely did. I had a great time playing it with my sister. We grew up with Mario Kart, so getting to mess around with the new game together was a lot of fun. We also played a bunch online, and the connection was smooth for the most part, which made the whole experience even better. The updated mechanics, like the rail-grinding, added just enough newness to the game to shake things up without feeling too complicated, though it was a challenge to figure out at first. One of the highlights for me was the new "Knockout Mode," where the racers in the back of the pack get eliminated each lap until there’s one winner left. It made races feel way more intense, especially online, and led to some hilarious (and brutal) finishes.
That said, as much as I enjoyed it, I don’t think it changed the formula enough to feel like it was worth playing over previous iterations. A lot of it still plays like a polished version of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which isn’t a bad thing, but I was hoping for something a little more bold or surprising for the cost. Also, I ran into a couple of maps that were just too bright and chaotic. Between flashing lights, neon effects, and nonstop background motion, it was sometimes genuinely hard to see where I was going, especially in the middle of a fast-paced online race. It didn’t ruin the game, but it was frustrating at times. Still, even with those flaws, Mario Kart World is a really solid entry in the series. It’s fun, it’s fast, and it gave me a lot of good moments with my sister and online. I just wish it had taken a few more risks.
Creative Use for a Library Program:
A fun and easy idea for a library program is to host a Mario Kart World tournament for teens. The library could set up a bracket, let players compete in short rounds, and offer small prizes for winners or best sportsmanship. An area for casual play could also exist for those who just want to hang out and race with friends. It’s a great way to bring teens together, especially those who might not usually attend library events. Plus, it doesn't require much prep and works well for drop in participation.

Speed Round Book Talk:
Mario Kart World brings back everything you love about the series with new mechanics, wild tracks, and a fast-paced "Knockout Mode" that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat. Play solo, online, or split screen with your friends and family. It’s fun, flashy, and full of energy. Just don’t blink, or you might miss the turn.
Potential Issues:
One potential issue with running a Mario Kart World program is the cost. The game itself, along with a Nintendo Switch 2 console, controllers, and display equipment, can be expensive, especially if the library doesn’t already own them. There’s also the risk of damage to hardware during use, which may require additional funding for repairs or replacements. Space and noise could be another concern if the library doesn't have space to accommodate this, as competitive games tend to get loud and may not work well in smaller or quieter library environments. Finally, while Mario Kart World is generally family friendly, some patrons may view video game programs as less educational or not aligned with traditional library services, which could lead to pushback from staff or community members.

Reason for Inclusion:
I chose to include Mario Kart World because it’s a fun, familiar, and accessible game that appeals to a wide range of ages, especially teens. It’s competitive without being overly violent, easy to learn, and encourages social interaction, whether you're playing with friends, family, or strangers online. I’ve seen firsthand how it can bring people together, and I think it’s a great way to get teens engaged in library spaces that they might not normally use. It also creates an opportunity to build community through something many already love.
