Album Summary: EPIC: the Musical is a fully sung through musical concept album that is a retelling of Homer’s The Odyssey. In nine musical “sagas,” EPIC: the Musical blends epic storytelling with modern music styles like pop, rock, and cinematic scoring. Created by Jorge "Jay" Rivera-Herrans and released independently through Winion Entertainment, the album follows Odysseus on his decade long journey home from Troy, facing gods, monsters, and moral dilemmas along the way. Built on a fanbase from TikTok, the musical has gained critical acclaim for its emotional depth, character-driven lyrics, and innovative structure.
Author:
Jorge “Jay” Rivera-Herrans grew up in Dorado, Puerto Rico, where he was surrounded by music, but he didn’t seriously pursue it until later in life. He originally studied pre-med at the University of Notre Dame, but after taking a musical theater class on a whim, everything shifted. That one class led him to discover a love for composing and storytelling, and he ended up changing his entire career path. He taught himself how to write music, sing, and produce from the ground up, blending his cultural background with influences from theater, anime, and video games. Despite not coming from a traditional theater background, Jorge built EPIC: the Musical from scratch, learning as he went and sharing the process online. He’s known not just for his talent, but for how open and collaborative he is with fans, constantly encouraging others to create alongside him. His story is just as powerful as the music he writes and is a reminder that creativity doesn’t have to follow a set path.

Critical Evaluation:
EPIC: the Musical is, well, epic. Every song is beautifully crafted and there’s not a single one that doesn’t hit emotionally or musically. Jorge Rivera-Herrans somehow manages to retell The Odyssey in a way that feels fresh, intense, and personal, without ever losing the scope or weight of the original. One of the most impressive things about the project is how intentionally inclusive it is. Jorge goes out of his way to hire a diverse cast of singers and voice actors, which not only adds layers to the storytelling, but makes it feel more grounded and real. The musical choices are also just genius. The way he uses pop and electronic elements, especially for the gods, gives the divine characters a distinct, otherworldly energy that contrasts so well with the grounded humanity of Odysseus and his crew. The story changes he makes are purposeful and effective and they make sense emotionally and thematically, even for people who know the source material inside and out. Every character gets room to shine, and the reoccurring musical themes tie the whole thing together so seamlessly. It’s the kind of musical that feels alive, and that's primarily because it was created by someone who truly cares about what he’s creating and who he's sharing it with.
Creative Use for a Library Program:
A library program around EPIC: the Musical could be a themed event where teens explore Greek mythology through the lens of the musical. It could start with a short intro to The Odyssey and how Jorge Rivera-Herrans adapted it into a musical, then play select songs and guide a discussion on character themes, music styles, and how storytelling changes across formats. After, there can be creative areas where they can write their own music inspired by Greek myths, write their own story inspired by Greek myths, and/or draw scenes from Odysseus' journey. There could also be themed snacks. Additionally, collaborate with a local music teacher or theater group for a lyric writing or a sound design workshop would be a great option. Making a display of Greek mythology inspired books leading up to the event to promote it would also be a great idea.
Speed Round Book Talk:
EPIC: the Musical is a retelling of The Odyssey told entirely through music. It follows Odysseus as he tries to make it home from war, facing gods, monsters, and the weight of his own choices. With sharp lyrics, powerful vocals, and a soundtrack that actually sticks, it’s one of those rare projects that feels both ancient and completely current.
Potential Issues:
There could be several potential issues with using EPIC: the Musical in a library program. First, the reimagining of Greek gods could also raise some eyebrows with folks sensitive to religious or mythological portrayals. Second is that, since the music isn’t in the public domain, you’d also need to double-check copyright rules before playing full tracks or using lyrics. There’s also the risk that not every teen will be familiar with the musical, since a lot of its popularity comes from TikTok, and that if they are familiar, they may not be interested. And finally, if you’re doing anything with music production or lyric writing, you might run into tech limitations depending on your space and budget.
Reason for Inclusion:
I chose to include EPIC: the Musical because teens are already talking about it. I've heard a lot of my students discussing it and it’s all over TikTok. Also, Jorge actively encourages his fandom to create, remix, and engage with the story in their own ways, so it's a great starting point for teens to grow creatively. It’s a creative entry point for teens who might not connect with traditional mythology. Lastly, since all the high schools in my area read The Odyssey in 9th grade, it’s a great way to make that required reading feel more relevant and exciting.
