Plot Summary: Set in 1995, Brownstone follows 14-year-old Almudena, who’s sent to spend the summer with her estranged Guatemalan father, Xavier, in New York City while her mother is in Europe. The two barely speak the same language, as she doesn’t know Spanish and he’s shaky with English, but they start working together to restore his historic brownstone, which Xavier hopes will provide affordable housing and push back against gentrification. As Almudena struggles with her sense of identity and the skepticism of neighbors who question her heritage, she begins to connect with the community, rebuild her relationship with her father, and discover where she belongs.
Author:
Samuel Teer grew up just outside St. Louis, Missouri, and now lives in Aurora, Colorado, with his wife and their two dogs, Roxie and Olive (Goodreads, 2025; HarperCollins, 2025). His writing blends personal history with themes of identity, heritage, and community, something that’s especially clear in his debut graphic novel, Brownstone. In an interview, he shared that the book was inspired by his relationships and experiences growing up in a multi-language household as an American-born Latin American (Crum, 2024). Brownstone went on to win the 2025 Michael L. Printz Award and has been praised for its heartfelt storytelling and its focus on underrepresented voices (CBS New York, 2025).

Illustrator:
Mar Julia is an illustrator and comics artist from South Florida, now based in Baltimore, Maryland. Their debut full-length graphic novel, Brownstone, came out June 11, 2024, picked up starred reviews from Kirkus and Publishers Weekly, snagged a Harvey nomination, and later won the 2025 Michael L. Printz Award. Beyond books, their client list ranges from Warner Bros. Animation to Penguin Random House, with work that leans into intimate, character-driven storytelling (Julia, 2019). They also co-edit Datura Magazine, a yearly, queer, josei-inspired comics zine made with their partner, Sunmi (Julia, 2019).
Critical Evaluation:
Brownstone tells a quiet, but powerful story about identity, belonging, and family. Samuel Teer lets Almudena and Xavier’s story unfold slowly, with awkward silences, small wins, and moments where you can practically feel the frustration in the air. Almudena’s experience as a biracial Guatemalan-American girl is front and center. She’s caught between cultures, not speaking her father’s language and unsure if she even “counts” as part of his world, something I found relatable as a Palestinian-American who doesn't speak Arabic. The 1995 New York setting feels real without trying too hard, and the big topics, like gentrification, language barriers, figuring out where you belong, are baked into the story in a way that feels natural. It’s a coming of age story that’s as much about learning who you are as it is about figuring out who your family really is.
Mar Julia’s art nails the mood perfectly. The warm, muted colors make the whole thing feel like a hazy summer memory, and the brownstone itself has so much personality it almost becomes its own character. The illustrations also lean into Almudena’s internal struggle, capturing her feeling out of place in both her father’s community and her mother’s world, then slowly showing her becoming part of the space. There’s a lot going on in the background, with little details, shifts in light, characters’ body language, that say just as much as the dialogue. The combination of Teer’s writing and Julia’s illustrations makes this one of those graphic novels you finish and immediately want to force someone else to read.

Creative Use for a Library Program:
A library program around Brownstone could be a teen comic making day where teens creates short comics about their own neighborhoods, families, or cultural heritage. It could start with a quick chat about the book’s themes, like identity, being bicultural, and community, and then let teens run with their own stories. Additionally, bringing in a local BIPOC artist to give tips and encourage using multiple languages like Almudena’s story could benefit the program. At the end, the comics could be displayed wall that's been decorated to look like a brownstone to show off all the participants hard work and the diverse community in the area.
Speed Round Book Talk:
In the summer of 1995, 14-year-old Almudena gets stuck living with her Guatemalan dad, a man she barely knows and can barely talk to thanks to a major language barrier. While fixing up his crumbling brownstone to fight gentrification, she starts untangling what it means to be biracial, where she fits in, and how to build a relationship from scratch. It’s heartfelt, beautifully drawn, and full of those small, quiet moments that end up changing everything.

Potential Issues:
A program around Brownstone could bring up some sensitive topics that need careful handling. The book deals with gentrification, immigrant experiences, and the struggles of being biracial, which might hit close to home for some teens and their families. Conversations about identity and language barriers could unintentionally make participants feel singled out or “othered” if the discussion isn’t handled with care. There’s also the chance of pushback from community members who see the focus on cultural identity, bilingual storytelling, or LGBTQ+ representation as political. Making sure the program is framed as a celebration of personal stories and creativity would help keep it inclusive and welcoming.
Reason for Inclusion:
I chose to include Brownstone because it’s a rare YA graphic novel that captures the complexity of being biracial and navigating two cultures without flattening the experience into a stereotype. Almudena’s story of figuring out her identity, building a relationship with her Guatemalan father, and finding her place in a community hit by gentrification feels deeply relevant for today’s teens. It also stands out for weaving in themes like language barriers, immigrant heritage, and LGBTQ+ representation, while still being an accessible, engaging read. The combination of heartfelt writing and expressive art makes it a strong choice for sparking conversations about belonging, family, and the many ways we define home.
