Overview
Oftentimes, the most efficient way to learn more about advanced writing (and researching) in a discipline is to look at good models. These models can be from publications (i.e., reading what's already out there). However, it's sometimes even more useful to read the writing of other graduate-level students.
Annotated Sample Student Papers
Follow the links below to read sample papers from other SJSU graduate students in your field. This section includes two papers from INFO 200: Information Communities. The samples have been annotated by LIS faculty member Dr. Michael Stephens to provide you with tips for items to consider while writing.
The assignments in INFO 200 are meant to build on student knowledge of a chosen community’s information behavior, understanding of peer-reviewed research articles and community-created resources related to the group, and a synthesis of course content with findings about the community. Blogging and the other major assignments provide content and insights for the successful competition of the research paper.
The paper is evaluated on the following criteria:
thoroughness of background research (well-developed literature review);
connection to LIS theories and models from course content;
organization and clarity of writing (clearly and logically presented ideas);
originality, depth of analysis and critical reflection; and
professional presentation (citations, references, proofreading, reference list).
Annotations highlight successful passages, good use of research, clarity of writing, critical thinking, and more. Both papers received full marks for professional presentation.
