二度と(NI DO TO):
a transplanted pilgrimage
This immersive multimedia installation—created by acclaimed artist Yayoi Kambara and hosted at the Japanese American Museum of San Jose—explores the historical trauma and resilience of Japanese American incarceration through choreography, hologram, video game design, and storytelling.
As part of SJSU's AAS 192 course with Professor Yvonne Kwan this semester, our students contributed to one of the interactive elements of the exhibit: Fortune Tellers! They engaged with the Densho Digital Repository and reflected on their own experiences of double consciousness, producing creative responses that are now featured as part of this powerful exhibition.
Also, San José State University now has an institutional membership with the Japanese American Museum of San Jose (JAMsj), which now offers free admission to all SJSU faculty, staff, and students. This partnership expands opportunities for public engagement and community-based learning.
The Africana, Asian American, Chicano, & Native American (AAACNA) Studies Center at SJSU is launching the Waves of Resilience: Art & Scenes of AAPI Healing Exhibit. This exhibit showcases the powerful intersection of art, photography, music, poetry, and storytelling that explores themes of healing and wellness within the Asian American and Pacific Islander Diaspora communities. Through diverse mediums, the collection highlights personal stories and cultural expressions that emphasize resilience, self-care, mental health, and collective healing.
The Exhibit will be held from March 29th-May 25th and located on the 5th floor of Dr. Martin Luther King Library (150 E San Fernando St, San Jose, CA 95112). We welcome submissions from Asian and Pacific Islander community members all across the diaspora, including students, artists, community organizers, healers, educators, and all interested in sharing their work with the community.
We would love to have you join us for our Community Exhibit Celebration Reception on Sunday April 27th from 2-4pm pst at King Library 5th floor open to all. We will have food, music, and a great celebration for all our artists and community members. Please rsvp via this google form here.
For any questions, please contact Dr. Wayne Jopanda at wayne.jopanda@sjsu.edu .
CAASPA is an organization of Asian American Students building on the legacy of 55+ years of critical Asian American resistance and organizing at SJSU. We seek to build political consciousness and critical mobilization for social justice, anti-racist, and anti-imperial issues amongst Asian American students on campus.
Interested in learning how capitalism, colonialism, and imperialism shape our current conditions? Want to build with other Asian Americans in the struggle for social justice? Looking to build community and connect with others? Think Asian Americans should be more politically organized, want to become more politically aware yourself, or think we should be involved in more solidarity efforts across campus? Come by the first meeting and learn more about us!
Our first meeting will be:
Tuesday, April 15, 2024
3:00PM - 4:30PM
DMH 235B
Bring a friend or two. We are excited to start building together.
