Flow-Based Systems

Physical systems, such as water distribution systems, oil & gas pipelines, and human cardiovascular system, that can be modeled as a flow network in which a physical entity, e.g., water, oil or blood, flows through the edges of the network

Water Distribution System Monitoring

  • Designing efficient monitoring mechanisms for water distribution systems (WDS) using a combination of free-swimming mobile sensors and static sensors.
  • Objective: Minimize the impact of a leak or a contamination on a community.
  • Methodology: Overlaying geosocial information on the WDS map.

Blood Circulation Systems

  • An application of flow-based systems research for targeted drug delivery to achieve targeted delivery of drugs to organs through the human circulatory system
  • Objective: Release nanoparticles to maximize the drug delivery to a target organ and minimize the side-effects
  • Methodology: The movement of drug nanoparticles released into the blood stream are modeled as flow network
Blood Circulation Systems

Geothermal Exploration

  • An application of flow-based systems research for geothermal reservoir exploration to map temperature gradients in underground reservoirs
  • Objective: Optimize placement of injection and production wells
  • Methodology: Underground reservoir abstracted as a directed graph
