The Computational Neuroengineering and Control Lab develops educational activities that make neuroscience, neural engineering, computation, and control accessible to students at different stages of their education.
Our outreach has included high school neural engineering programs, classroom presentations, brain–machine interface demonstrations, and the development of low-cost EEG systems for hands-on learning.
In collaboration with Ling Ru “Katy” Kuei at Mission San Jose High School, our lab introduces high-school students to neural engineering, brain signals, computational modeling, and emerging technologies for understanding and interacting with the nervous system.
Activities include classroom presentations, accessible demonstrations, and discussions connecting neuroscience with chemistry, engineering, computation, and medicine.
Commercial EEG systems can be prohibitively expensive for classroom use. Through a series of university senior-design projects, we developed and evaluated lower-cost EEG systems intended to help students explore electrophysiological signals, signal acquisition, and neural engineering.
The long-term goal is to develop accessible hardware and instructional materials that can support hands-on neuroscience and engineering education.
In partnership with Pat Blount at Moscow High School, Dr. Kumar initiated an educational outreach program that introduced high-school students to neural engineering, brain signals, electroencephalography, and brain–machine interfaces.
Activities included demonstrations of how neural activity can be measured and used to interact with external devices.
Students from engineering, computer science, statistics, neuroscience, and related disciplines are encouraged to explore opportunities in the lab.
Potential projects include computational neuroscience, physiological modeling, neural-signal processing, machine learning, system identification, state estimation, and closed-loop control.
