Have a lot of classes and not sure how you're going to make it through the semester with an A? As SJSU students, we have been there! Piling homework assignments and the never ending pages of chapters to review can be daunting, but with the right tools, strategies, and consistency, you will find that studying doesn't have to be stressful and difficult to keep up with.
Here are some quick tips to survive the semester
(and actually retain some information!)
Review the syllabus often by keeping your class schedule where you can see it.
It is so easy to skim through the syllabus and forget all the assignments, projects, and midterms that are due. Keeping copies in your folder, binder, and even on your wall will make it easier to see and remember when things are coming up and what topics that will covered. Nobody likes having points docked off for submitting an assignment late, or worse, no points at all.
*Pro tip: Put reminders on your phone for assignments that are due.
Review lecture slides and read upcoming chapters before class.
Doing this will prepare you to ask questions about the topic in class to gain a better understanding and more time to connect these concepts to the field you are studying. Don't be the doctor who doesn't know what they're talking about; ask the questions to be the best clinician!
Talk about what you have learned.
Putting into words what you have learned is an excellent way to solidify memory of a concept and be better prepared for your upcoming midterms. This also helps think back on information that you may need in your future career. Share what you've learned to a friend or family member as if you were the professor teaching the lesson.
Always take notes during class!
Though this tip may seem like a no brainer, I can't tell you how many times I have seen students just sit in class and simply listen to the entire seminar or lecture without jotting one piece of useful information. Though we always seem to have lecture slides and chapters to refer back to, our professors can share valuable pieces of information that you will not be able to find in the sources given. They may also explain a concept that makes more sense in their own words.
Study with a friend!
Nothing makes the dream work like team work! Even if you practice all of the tips mentioned, studying solo can lead to a decrease in motivation and discipline. Reach out to a classmate and plan study dates in the CDS Success Center, Martin Luther King Jr. Library, or Wellness Center study area. Exchange phone numbers, connect, and support one another through assignments, projects, studying, and a guaranteed dose of motivation.
