This is a two-year program offered at Hillyard Technical Center featuring Career Pathways for the Teaching Profession I and II. The course is intended for any individual wanting to learn more about, or get a head start on a career in education. The course is based upon the following goals:
1. Recruit quality secondary students for the Teaching Profession,
2. Provide students with information about the challenges and opportunities offered by a career in education,
3. Provide students a seamless pathway to a career in education and training through academic coursework, study of the profession, and experiential learning activities with the potential for advanced knowledge and college credit.
The program features major units of study in: Elements of Teaching, Educator Responsibilities, Classroom Climate, Behavior Management, Policy and Law, Governing and Finance, Instructional Design, Instructional Delivery, Data Analysis, and Student Growth. Students will participate in learning experiences at Hillyard Technical Center, and on-site in an actual classroom.
This unit addresses the teaching profession and the process for becoming a teacher. Students are also introduced to career skills necessary for acquiring meaningful employment and being successful on the job.
In this unit, students will analyze the role of creating a safe and organized environment in establishing effective classroom management. Student safety, both physical and emotional, will be a consistent theme of the unit.
This unit develops a deeper understanding of child growth and development, allowing students to apply developmental theories to real-life situations while analyzing the impact of these theories on teaching. In addition, students will study barriers to education and begin to examine a teacher’s role in supporting student growth despite barriers in education.
This unit examines the early history of education in America as well as historical factors that have substantially influenced education today.
This unit addresses the legal and ethical aspects of the teaching profession. Students will be introduced to policies that impact teachers and additional stakeholders, such as families and students.
This unit outlines the overall structure of the education system and how schools are governed and funded. Students will also learn how teachers are professionally trained within the profession along with how that training is funded.
In this unit, students will understand how curriculum development and planning is important to the practice of teaching. Designing lessons with a variety of instructional strategies that align with learning standards, while differentiating for diverse learners, will be an ongoing focus throughout the unit.
This unit will summarize the purpose of assessment, both formative and summative, as a tool to measure student progress and learning. Students will learn how to choose appropriate assessment tools and strategies along with effective grading practices.
