Film Studies is a course based on the Missouri Priority Learning Standards for English Language Arts. Students read about the history of film; the reflection or influence of film on the culture; and issues of interpretation, production, and adaptation. Students examine the visual interpretation of literary techniques and auditory language in film and the limitations or special capacities of film versus text to present a literary work. Students analyze how films portray the human condition and the roles of people in the past and present.

Students will examine how movies have evolved from silent pictures to “talkies.” They will also examine the history of adaptations and why Hollywood has sought out source material that exists in another medium to turn into movies.
Students will research and learn about the different genres of film and the similarities and differences of the presentation of those genres on screen versus on the page. They will also examine how historical events influence movies.
Students will examine the visual interpretation of literary techniques and elements. They will also examine the benefits and limitations of on screen adaptations of literary works.
Students will examine the visual interpretation and implementation of the author's voice and purpose in film form. They will also examine the effectiveness of argument on screen versus on the page.
Students will examine the difference between Hollywood blockbusters versus independent films and the importance of the Box Office. They will also examine how audience awareness is applied to a visual form.
Students will examine the development of themes in a visual form versus a literary work. They will also examine the relationship between characters’ actions to develop a movie’s themes.
Students will create a final project to show their learning from the semester. They will choose from multiple options and formats for their summative assessment.
