Bio 115 - Intro to Human Inheritance

Bio 115 is an introductory level course that teaches students the basics of genetics and how simple traits are passed through generations. Some topics include: Mendelian genetics, genetics of cancer, genetics of behavior, and chromosomal disorders. Students also complete a genetics in the news assignment where they identify a recent genetics research discovery and present it to the rest of the class.

Bio 290 - Modern Genetics

Modern Genetics is one of the core classes for biology majors. Students learn the basics of genetics, including gene expression, DNA structure, and the genetics of complex traits. In lab, students learn basic molecular techniques such as pipetting and PCR and also have the opportunity to work on real research projects. These research project culminate with poster presentations at SJU's Undergraduate Research Symposium at the end of the Spring semester.

Bio 461 - Molecular Biology

Molecular Biology is an upper level elective for biology majors that focuses on the history and use of modern molecular techniques. Students improve their laboratory skills, analyze and discuss scientific papers, and write lab reports. Students also perform an open-ended project. In the past, this has included analyzing dog genotypes and comparing this to their physical traits.
