Service Learning Requirement Overview
SY 2025-2026
Service Learning has long been a part of the educational experience at SJND and is fundamental to our mission that students be “ready to live joyful lives of faith, scholarship, and service.”
The breakdown of Service Hours for each grade level is:
9th Grade = 10 hours
10th Grade = 15 hours
11th Grade = 20 hours
12th Grade = 25 hours
TYPES OF SERVICE HOURS
SCHOOL SERVICE HOURS are voluntary work designed to help the people in or events at the SJND Community specifically.
You may acquire your SCHOOL SERVICE by doing some of these (but not limited to):
1. Club-related services - some activities or events led by clubs like SJND Med Club, MTA for productions, Interact, STEAM Society, etc.
2. Parish-related services - Ex: altar serving, being a reader, choir singing, or ushering at the Saint Joseph Basilica during masses
3. SJND-related service - helping out during Pasta Dinner, Catholic Schools Week, Summer Pathway, helping out in some ALT or CLT-related activities like Spirit Week, teachers needing help for specific events, painting sets for Theater production on work days
4. Peer Tutoring - usually initiated by the National Honors Society
5. Curriculum-led services - some activities sponsored by Visual Arts and Performing Arts or some activities sponsored by Visual Arts and Performing Arts or events led by any subject-teacher related to the curriculum
OUT-OF-SCHOOL SERVICE HOURS are voluntary work rendered to an organization outside the SJND network and/or premises.
You may acquire your OUT-OF-SCHOOL SERVICE HOURS by doing some of these (but not limited to):
1. Making cards for veterans or children’s hospital - usually sponsored by a service-based organization
2. Helping in soup kitchens around the Bay Area
3. Sports coaching outside SJND
4. Mission trips and service
5. Beach clean up
6. Sophomore retreat in St. Anthony (maximum of 3 hours are counted)
7. Leading Retreats
*Leading retreats is considered an honor and a privilege. However, Retreat Leaders may only acquire 5 hours of Service Hours by being a Retreat Leader.
Doing more Out-of-School Service Hours is HIGHLY ENCOURAGED.
SERVICE OPTIONS:
Always be on the lookout in the Student Bulletin posts.
You may also check the Service Menu.
CONSIDERATIONS:
Please keep in mind that not all of these are AUTOMATIC acquisition for service hours. Your Service Supervisor should be able to tell you which events or activities will gain you service hours.
YOUR SUPERVISORS shall fill out the Supervisor Service Hour Verification Form for the student. However, the student needs to make sure that he or she is giving the correct link and accurate information (your email address and name) to his or her Service Supervisor. The link to the Supervisor Verification Form is also posted under the Service tab in the Student Landing page. Parents do not fill out the Service forms for their child.
Each Student is required to do a specific amount of Service Hours (please refer to the breakdown of Service Hours above).
Paid jobs, internships, fundraising activities for personal gain, monetary donations, and household chores do not count for service hours.
OTHER INFORMATION:
Your Campus Ministers will send a MONTHLY reminder indicating the total number of hours you have acquired to give you an idea how many hours you will still have to fulfill.
You are given until the end of April 2025 to fulfill your Service Hours. You will also receive a final reminder by that time. By May 5, 2025 all Service Hours shall be verified and any student who didn’t fulfill the required Service Hours shall be mandated to complete them over the Summer. Non-compliance may mean non-admission for the Fall school year. For Seniors, Service Hours are required to be eligible for graduation.
Service Hours do not “carry over” the next school year. All students are required to fulfill service hours EVERY YEAR. Anything extra is a result of your love to serve.
